Total municipal solid waste collected is around 5000 tonnes in 426 sq. km of the city

Door-to-door collection in residential areas

Tricycles collect garbage at the doorstep of every house (from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.) — garbage taken to bins on the streets — compactors empty the trash in the bins and take it to nearest transfer stations — tipper lorries transport garbage from transfer stations to Perungudi or Kodungaiyur dumping yards

Direct collection from commercial areas (Paid service)

Hotels and marriage halls store garbage in bins — compactors arrive at fixed time everyday and take garbage to transfer stations — tipper lorries transport garbage to dumping yards

Sweeping of roads

Each 500-metre stretch of road is cleaned by a sweeper — mud, sand and other debris collected in bins — compactor takes debris to transfer station — tipper lorries transport it to dumping yards

Garden garbage collection

Palfinger (hydraulic vehicle) visits neighbourhood to collect garden garbage – stored for a short period in transfer stations — tipper lorries transport the waste to dumping yards

Biomedical waste collection

Biomedical waste is collected from hospitals — taken by two private companies by special vehicles to a separate location for incineration

Each tricycle covers 250 houses per day

Conservancy operations in three privatised zones

Teynampet - 600 tonnes per day

Kodambakkkam - 600 tonnes per day

Adyar - 550 tonnes per day

Conservancy operations in Tiruvottiyur, Manali, Madhavaram, Thiru.Vi.Ka. Nagar, Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Anna Nagar, Ambattur, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Perungudi and Sholinganallur zones are carried out by Corporation employees.

Corporation collects 3050 to 3200 tonnes of municipal solid waste from the twelve zones. Neel Metal Fanalca is not active in some parts of Ambattur where it still has a role in conservancy. The Chennai Corporation will take over shortly.
