The car, in which Shanthini Kapoor, Principal Secretary (Special Programme Implementation) to the State government since November 2012, was travelling to Bengaluru on Wednesday, lost control near the Chennai Bypass Road  in Krishnagiri and collided with a lorry. Besides Ms. Kapoor, the two others killed were identified as Richard Christie, the official’s brother-in-law, and V. Selvaraj, a Special Sub-Inspector of Police, who drove the vehicle. Ms Kapoor’s sister Patricia (45), and niece Anna Christina (20) were rushed to a hospital in Bengaluru. Lorry driver D. Bhaskar (30) escaped unhurt. The car-lorry collision had affected another car trailing the lorry. Seven passengers were injured.

Ms. Kapoor of the 1983 batch of the IAS held a Ph.D. in public administration.

A native of Chennai, she held various positions including Chennai Collector (1995-1997).
