Test for Ebola proves negative

A 22-year-old man who was admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital on Tuesday, as a precaution against Ebola, has tested negative for the deadly virus, officials said.

The man, a lab technician from Ariyalur district who was working at a clinic in Nigeria, had landed in Chennai with fever and was taken to the hospital’s isolation ward. “He is doing well now and we may discharge him on Thursday,” a hospital official said.

The test report arrived on Wednesday afternoon from the National Institute of Virology, Pune, said director of public health K. Kolandaisamy. “But the man will continue to be monitored until the 30-day period from his date of leaving Nigeria is completed. Even though he has tested negative, we cannot make any exemptions in a screening programme such as ours,” he said, adding that they would also try and find out what had caused the fever.

For any help on health-related issues, residents can call the helpline 104.
