The Chennai Corporation will soon float tenders to renovate five vehicular subways, two bridges and one flyover in the city.
The concrete riding surface of Aranganathan subway, the Madley Road subway, the Veeran Sivalingam (Doraisamy Road) subway, the subway near RBI and Gengu Reddy subway in Chetpet will be replaced.
Civic body officials said water leaks at joints where Railway and Corporation portions meet would be corrected. The water table in the RBI subway is very high and water stagnates on the riding surface. An estimated Rs. 60 lakh would be spent on improving the RBI subway. Its bicycle track and pedestrian pathway would also be renovated.
Estimates have been drawn for the projects and Rs.13 lakh would be spent on the Madley Road subway, Rs. 16 lakh on the Veeran Sivalingam subway, Rs.15 lakh on the Aranganathan subway and Rs.21 lakh on the Gengu Reddy subway. The walls of the facilities would be decorated with wall paintings as part of the renovation work.
However, improvement of lighting in subways is not being included in the renovation work, which is expected to begin by June-end and be completed before the monsoon.
Police permission would be sought to close portions of subways to traffic. The concrete would need about a week for curing.
The Thiru Vi Ka bridge across the Adyar and the Vaidhyanathan bridge would be renovated at a cost of Rs. 34 lakh and Rs.80 lakh respectively. The approach slab of the Vaidhyanathan bridge in north Chennai has to be replaced. The Stanley viaduct, the flyover opposite the Chennai Central railway station, would be restored at a cost of Rs.70 lakh.
An official said that the civic body would write to Southern Railway informing them that it would take up work on its portion. “We will be replacing the riding surface and relaying footpaths, concretise the hand railings and undertake exterior painting work in these facilities,” he said.
