Two days after she was set on fire by her neighbour, a 17-year-old girl from Korukupet in north Chennai died on Monday afternoon at the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.

The police said Palkis Banu (35) had asked a marriage broker and her neighbour, Sanaullah (32) to fix an alliance for her daughter. Sanaullah brought a few alliances but the girl rejected them. The last one he brought was of a 40-year-old man. Unhappy with the proposal, the girl refused to marry him. On Saturday night, agitated over the refusal, Sanaullah poured kerosene on her and set her on fire. The girl was admitted to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital with severe burns.

Based on a complaint, the R.K. Nagar police arrested Sanaullah and a case under IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder) was registered. However, on Monday, a case of murder was registered, said an officer with the R.K. Nagar police.
