Technology for effective power use

January 12, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 10:00 am IST - CHENNAI:

The revision of electricity tariff across all sectors in the State has brought into focus the importance of periodic energy audits, even for domestic consumption.

It is all the more important, experts point out, to conduct them for industries. Only an audit can help companies gauge power usage, the first step to saving on electricity bills, they say. While an energy audit is done based on data on energy consumption of various electrical applications, the conventional audit suffers from the deficiency of being unable to provide real-time consumption pattern of individual machines.

A city-based online venture eMeter.in is now engaged in promoting intelligent use of energy by managing electricity optimally in factories and industrial units.

The company’s technology operates on the sub-meter platform, is compatible with all meters, and helps in gauging over- or under-load scenarios, wear-and-tear, and peak load utilisation of heavy machinery when they are running. Customers are notified of performance information through the portal or through SMS on the subscribed numbers.

Dayal Nathan, founder of the company, said the state-of-the-art electricity-monitoring tool brings out the specific, real-time energy consumption pattern of each and every electrical device. Analysing the energy consumption pattern would also help identify areas of productivity and efficiency, he said.

Though the company’s main products are for commercial users, it also has on offer one product for domestic users — an android application, e-rates. Mr. Nathan said based on the feedback from users, the company planned to introduce version 2 of the application, which would provide an interactive, visual-based energy audit.
