A young IT professional jumped to his death on Monday at Express Avenue in Royapettah in full view of shoppers.

Around 3.27 p.m., 23-year-old D. Shanmugam of Cognizant Technologies jumped from the third floor of the mall on to the central hall.

Some shoppers took him to the Government Royapettah Hospital where he was declared ‘brought dead’.

Police suspect unrequited love to be the cause of the suicide.

Eyewitnesses said Shanmugam put his leg over the steel handle at the top of an escalator and jumped. They alleged that he was lying unattended for around 15 minutes.

Around 100 shoppers blocked Whites Road for nearly 30 minutes to protest the alleged delay by the mall authorities in shifting him to a hospital. They got into a heated argument with the police. Eventually, a police team led by Mohammed pacified the agitators and got them to disperse peacefully.

Shanmugam’s body has been sent for post-mortem. A case under Section 174 of IPC was filed by the Anna Salai police.
