Staff working in retail liquor vending stores operated by the Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) will get double wages on May 1, Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi announced in the Assembly on Friday. Intervening in the debate for the demands for grants for the Home Department, he said, in reply to a request from M. Appavoo (DMK), that over 29,000 staff would benefit from this, including supervisors, sales staff and assistants.

A question on when the government planned to hold elections to cooperative societies by O. Paneerselvam (Deputy Leader of the Opposition), elicited a sharp response from Cooperation Minister Ko.Si. Mani: “Have you ever held an election [to cooperative societies]?”

Mr. Karunanidhi remarked that they would wonder what cooperative election was.
