TANUVAS merit list toppers are first-gen students

The top two students who have been admitted to undergraduate degree in veterinary and animal science on Thursday’s counselling at the veterinary science university here are first-generation graduates.

Jones Denison S., who topped the merit list with 197 marks, studied in a government aided school in Pattukottai till Class X and did his Plus Two from Brindavan Matriculation School, also from the same town.

He had passed Class XII last year and had hoped to get a seat in a medical college. When that did not materialise last year too, he decided to opt for veterinary science this year. His father is a hotel cashier.

Third ranker Kanmani M also studied from a private school in Ichampatti in Salem district. Her father works in a brick klin. As a child she had helped her father in the kiln till Class X, says Kanmani who had tried to bag a seat in MBBS.

“I am wait listed and if I get admitted to a government medical college then I will take up medicine,” says Kanmani. She says she owes her education to her maternal uncle.

A total of 18,302 candidates had applied for 272 seats in the various programmes offered by the Tamil Nadu Veterinary Science University. As many as 16,268 candidates were found eligible. For the 243 seats under the general category 1,668 candidates were sent out call letters and 531 aspirants appeared for counselling.

Animal Husbandry Minister Balakrishna Reddy distributed call letters to toppers. Senior university officials participated in the programme.
