A 40-year-old Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) employee was electrocuted while attending to a complaint at Zam Bazaar on Friday evening.

The police said a complaint from Thannapa Street Junction pertaining to power supply was received at the Royapettah-2 Tangedco office around 2 p.m., and K. Kumar (40), the lineman, went there around 2.30 p.m.

He started working on a junction box and, by mistake, touched a live cable and was electrocuted on the spot. Seeing Kumar lying unconscious, a man working in a cycle shop nearby rushed to his help and using a log pushed away the cable and called a 108 ambulance. “But when the ambulance staff checked his pulse, he was already dead. They informed us and we sent the body to Royapettah Government Hospital for post-mortem,” said a police officer at Zam Bazaar police station.

Kumar was from Ennore Kuppam Road and had been working with Tangedco since 1995. “He did not switch off the power before starting work on the junction box. It is also reported that he was not wearing his safety gloves. We have registered an FIR based on a complaint filed by a Tangedco official,” the police said.

Meanwhile, senior Tangedco officials have sought a report on the incident.
