The Rs.16-crore road overbridge to replace the railway level crossing near Tambaram Sanatorium was formally dedicated at a function on Sunday evening.
Though motorists have been using the facility for some time now, it was dedicated after completion of all civil works.
Highways Minister Vellakoil Saminathan dedicated the bridge in the presence of former Union Minister and member of Sriperumbudur Lok Sabha constituency T.R. Baalu and Labour Minister T.M. Anbarasan, among others.
The road overbridge linking Grand Southern Trunk with Chitlapakkam and East Tambaram is aimed at improving connectivity for motorists coming from Hasthinapuram, Chromepet, Chitlapakkam, Medavakkam, Selaiyur and East Tambaram.
The project was taken up among others to replace all level crossings on the Tambaram–Chennai Beach rail sector taken up under the gauge conversion project of 1998-99 to ensure “throughput enhancement,” a note said.
Due to land acquisition delays and litigations, the project was shelved.
Southern Railway has spent about Rs.6 crore as its share of the project, officials said.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Baalu said the State government had spent Rs.12,000 crore on various highways projects in Tamil Nadu to boost infrastructure.
