Swine flu: Institute’s role lauded

The Chennai Corporation was able to control swine flu [A(H1N1) flu] successfully because of the key role played by the King Institute of Preventive Medicine and Research, said Mayor M. Subramanian on Sunday.

Speaking at the valedictory function of the first annual congress of the Indian Association of Medical and Pharmaceutical Virologists (IAMPV), organised by the King Institute and the association, he said the Corporation would request the State government to take measures for improvement of the laboratory facilities and support it for development of more diagnostic kits.

More funds were required for improvement of the institute with a large campus of 56 acres, said P. Gunasekaran, deputy director of the institute. Pro-Vice Chancellor of Sri Ramachandra University S.P. Thyagarajan delivered special oration.
