Sudden rains, accompanied by thunder and lightning, lashed the city and its suburbs on Friday evening, immediately bringing down the temperature.

Residents, who had been suffering due to the sweltering heat this week, heaved a sigh of relief

Residents of the city and suburbs can also hope to get more rains. According to officials, an upper air trough has set in.

The city may have some relief from the heat till Monday as the trough extending from Telangana to Comorin area is predicted to bring rainfall to many places in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during the weekend.

While some places in other parts of the State may even get heavy rainfall, Chennai will continue to get thundershowers, according to officials at the meteorological department.

The weather system already had an impact on Friday’s temperature level as the city recorded 35.3 degree Celsius.

On Thursday, the maximum temperature had risen to 36.8 degree Celsius in Nungambakkam and 37.3 degree Celsius in Meenambakkam, the month’s highest so far. On the chances of another April downpour, similar to the one on April 13, officials said the present system usually occurred during this time of the year and that Chennai might get only light to moderate showers.

This summer had started on a happy note with Chennai receiving 39.3 mm of rainfall since March 1, which is 254 per cent more than usual. The department forecasts that the sky will be partly cloudy and the day temperature will be around 36 degree Celsius till Sunday.
