Swamy seeks early hearing on his petition

March 31, 2011 02:05 am | Updated November 09, 2016 06:23 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Janata Party president Subramanian Swamy on Wednesday requested the Madras High Court for an early hearing on his petition challenging the premature release of convicts in 2008.

Conditions imposed

Dr.Swamy came to the First Bench consisting of the Chief Justice M.Y.Eqbal and Justice T.S.Sivagnanam on Wednesday morning and said he had filed a petition against the premature release of nearly 1,400 convicts to coincide with C.N.Annadurai's birth anniversary in 2008.

When the convicted persons were released certain conditions were imposed on them. But those conditions were not being adhered to.

In Madurai, some of the released persons were threatening the Janata Party candidates.

Hence, his petition should be heard early or the court should pass an interim order.

Status report

The government should also file a status report as to whether the released convicts were sticking to the conditions.

The Bench posted the petition for June 15.
