Sujay Kumar Rai from Bihar was into real estate business
A day after the bloody encounter, the focus shifted to the identity of the suspected bank robbers who were shot dead in Velachery. The prime suspect in the bank robbery case was identified by his family members late on Friday night.
According to police sources, the man whose image was released by the Chennai Police after the second bank robbery was identified as Sujay Kumar Rai alias Vinod Kumar of Patna district. The father, sister and other family members of Sujay arrived in Chennai late on Friday and met police officials at the Commissioner's office. They claimed that Sujay lost his fingers in a blast several years ago but maintained that he was not involved in any bank robbery case before. However, the entire family was involved in a case pertaining to the death of Sujay's brother and sister-in-law in a village near Patna in Bihar.
Sujay was into real estate business, they said and pleaded ignorance about four others who were shot dead along with him in an encounter with the police during the small hours on Thursday.
Police sources said they suspected that the voter identity cards found in the hideout of the suspects were fake. Investigators are now pinning their hopes on the call details record that will have to be retrieved from dozens of SIM cards allegedly found on the premises of the suspects.
“While all the five had a mobile phone each, there were many SIM cards. We have formed a special team of the Cyber Crime Cell to examine the calls made/received by the suspects. This will probably provide leads to establish their identity, and indicate if they were part of any network,” a senior police official told The Hindu on Friday.
Police sent fingerprints of the suspects to the National and State Crime Records Bureaus to check whether they were involved in any other offence in the past, police sources added.
Meanwhile, eyewitnesses to the robberies were shown the five bodies kept at the mortuary of the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital here. According to hospital sources, 17 persons, including staff members from the Bank of Baroda branch in Perungudi and Indian Overseas Bank branch in Keelkattalai, ascertained that the bodies were those of the men who carried out the robbery at their respective branches. After a long session, the officials left the premises around 8 p.m. Earlier in the morning, XIV Metropolitan Magistrate Geeta Rani examined the bodies separately.

If we are talking about criminals in Bihar, TN is no less. There are cheat, rogues, cowards, murderers barbarians in every state and TN is one of them for sure. But Cops in TN have been doing a great job. There efforts in nailing down the perpetrators is indeed commendable.
My worry is that there are also so many murderers moving in the city freely. In how many of these case have the cops followed the trails with such interest. Such treatment should be given to every individual who is a proven breaker of the law. Again to quote about the states, the sons of the ex CM have not left a single opportunity in committing crime during their youth. Is this is not barbarism. It is said that one who sees dirt all around has the dirt in his mind.
Looting few lakhs, police killed them. Looting several crores what
they have done? he is still enjoying his life in Tihar Jail, he is
from none other than TN.
@Vyas Kavindra. Mr. Nitish can't go to each and every person of the community to get educated because he has renowned the university.. please also note that., the gangsters/rowdies are only those who are illiterate. please note, in our state tamil nadu, there are so many universities and educated persons., and not all educated are morally good...
@shobana. the robbers didn't wear masks.. i think you haven't read earlier reports..
The so called "human right" activists will have a job for days! When ever
security men are killed nobody bothers - except, of course, their wives
and children.
Hundreds of crores are siphoned from banks through loans and defaulters are going scot free. What moral authority we have to kill people when the sums involved in this case are peanuts?
This is a DANGEROUS TENDENCY to generalize that all the Bihari people coming to work in TN are thieves and looters. Such prejudices will destruct the harmony of our normal lives. We don't want TN to be another Maharashtra. With complete respect to TN Police's integrity, killing the suspects raises a lot of questions. Suppose some other were involved, may be of high profile, we will be loosing that information, information about people in the same field and above all taking a life is not justifiable by all means. People are bad does not mean that they deserve to die. Even the wildest beasts have their right to live. The Hindu has always maintained this stand against killings. More than nature, it is the circumstances that make people do things.
how did the bank officials identify the culprits? I thought the bank
robbers were wearing masks!
Hi guys, stop portraying the entire Bihar people as a criminals. In India we have habit of bad mouthing about the whole religion, community, caste & language just because of an individual or small section of people indulge in criminal / anti national activities. We too have many criminals in our region.
Now it is proved that the police personnel opened fire at the criminals. As the Bank officials identified them.If we(the society)take or view leniently, supposing them only as robberers,it is fatal on us.This kind of criminals don't hesitate to kill who resist them in their operations.
The wonder of India is that, Bihar unfortunately was the abode of renowned Nalanda University and also to these notorious men. Unassuming Nitish Kumar the present CM is putting all his energies to transform the state as best. Compulsory implementation of RTE and improving employment opportunities to all youth in both private and public sector can only improve the situation. We should also increase our jails in view of over population and put all law breakers must be sent and educate & train them there to earn their bread themselves through hard work. Indiscipline cannot be tolerated anywhere.
So this silences all the critics and doubtful Thomases of the Honesty & Integrity of Tamil Nadu police on their action-no need for any more discussions & debates as far as this issue is concerned-the chapter is closed-there was no doubt they killed the crimiminals not someone who is innocent only after they opened fire and yes everyone has a right to defend his/her life when in danger-be it in the jungles or what we call where we dwell as Human Civilizations where even animals more dangerous than the most dangerous animals we have ever known live-in the form of HUMANS.
