A dark circle engulfed the sun this morning, providing a visual treat to residents of Chennai and its suburbs and nearby Kancheepuram.
Director of Periyar Science and Technology Centre P. Iyamperumal described the occurrence as ‘sun halo’ and said it was a regular phenomenon caused by differential moisture content in the atmosphere.
“Such a phenomenon is not harmful but it should not be viewed for more than a second with the naked eye,” he said.
The halo, which was visible from around 11.30 hrs (IST), would last for about two hours, he added.
