City residents received a respite from the continual heat, with the temperature dipping to near normal on Saturday.

Sudden showers in some areas of the western and southern fringes of the city came as an added bonus. Localities including Koyambedu, Kolathur, Anna Nagar and Nanganallur received showers for about half an hour in the afternoon.

On Saturday, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam registered a maximum temperature of 33.5 degree Celsius and 34.2 degree Celsius respectively, which is one degree above the average recorded during this period.

Some weather observatories, including those in Meenambakkam, Puzhal and Sholinganallur registered negligible rainfall.

The automatic rain gauge in Kattuppakkam received 5.4 cm of rainfall.

According to officials of the meteorological department, convective activity, which occurs after an intense period of heat, contributed to the sudden showers.

The department forecasts that rain or thundershowers may occur in some areas on Sunday too, and the maximum temperature is likely to be around 34 degree Celsius.
