The subway at Basin Bridge was partly damaged when a speeding container lorry lost control and overturned there early on Saturday.

According to Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic-North) Joshi Nirmal Kumar, container lorries are not permitted to enter the subway due to height restrictions. However, the driver of the loaded container lorry ignored a police constable, who signalled him to stop and drove into the subway.

Traffic was diverted in the area and normality was restored in about three hours. The Railway Police have registered a case.

There was no disruption to rail traffic, police sources added.
