During the busy hours of the day, a sea surges across Poonamalle High Road, towards Central Railway station. It’s a sea of humanity. A subway is located not too far away, but commuters and pedestrians prefer walking across the road. There are three reasons for this.

One, a section of pedestrians consists of people who are from outside Chennai and most of them are unaware of the subway. It is not easily noticeable.

Two, there are commuters who point out that taking the subway would mean covering more distance on the way to the Central Station. There is also the complaint that vendors are occupying much of the space in the subway and there is little left for commuters.

The traffic police complain that commuters do not heed their instructions and dart across the road. “Considering the heavy traffic at the junction, there is a need to deploy more police personnel there are guide commuters heading towards the railway station,” says a traffic policeman.
