The Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission has pegged the subsidy quantum payable by the State government to the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board for 2010-11 for subsidised power supply to various sectors at Rs.1,652.43 crore.

According to the Regulatory Commission's official press release, the bulk of subsidy (nearly 76 per cent), amounting to Rs.1,249 crore is earmarked for domestic consumers, Rs.219 crore (13 per cent) meant for agricultural consumers and the balance Rs.184 crore (11 per cent) allotted for hut dwellers, handloom and powerloom weavers, street lights, public water supply and places of public worship.

Section 65 of the Electricity Act, 2003 mandates the State government to pay the subsidy in advance failing which the tariff fixed by the State Commission would be applicable.

The TNEB has since filed a tariff petition for revision of tariff.
