Hundreds of college students and corporate employees went on a rally on Saturday morning in support of acid attack survivors and to create awareness on women’s safety.
The rally was part of ‘Stree Suraksha ’ , an annual event organised by Rotaract Club of Women’s Christian College and Survival Instincts, a provider of American Red Cross training programmes in health and safety.
Nearly 900 people, bearing placards with messages against acid attacks on women, covered a distance of two km along Marina beach.
Rotaract Club’s secretary, Isabela Baxla, said the initiative was started in 2010 to support women’s empowerment.
“We raise funds to support women who are in need. Last year, we helped non-governmental organisations who were fighting for rape victims,” she said.
This year, the rally was organised to raise funds for three acid attack survivors in city.
Proceeds from sales of T-shirts would be provided to them for medical expenses, she added.
Survival Instincts is planning to organise workshops for ensuring safety against acid attacks. The workshops will focus on prevention and first aid.
