A clash broke out between students of the Government Arts College, Nandanam and New College in Royappetah on Thursday afternoon. While two students were injured, two others were arrested by police. This is the second such incident of students being arrested following a clash in the city in the last few days.

According to Anna Salai police, a few days ago, students of the Government Arts College were assaulted by a group of students from New College following a long-standing rivalry.

In retaliation,, over 20 students from Government Arts College went to Royapettah on Thursday afternoon and intercepted a bus (route number 21) from Mandavelli to Parrys, in which some New College students were travelling.

A clash broke out, following which Abdullah (20) and Ayaz (19) of New College were injured, while the rest of their college-mates fled. When the driver attempted to take the bus to a police station, the Arts College students damaged the windshield of the bus and fled.

Anna Salai police arrested Alex (19) and a 17-year-old, both students of the Arts College. They were remanded to custody.

Six Presidency students arrested

Meanwhile, the Thirumangalam police on Thursday arrested six undergraduate students of Presidency College following their involvement in a clash with Pachaiyappa’s College students on Wednesday. A woman commuter was injured in the mêlée. The clash occurred among the students travelling on an MTC bus in the city.

Police identified those arrested as Satish (20), Nickson (19), Karthik (19), Vignesh (19), Yuvaraj (20) and Sarath Kumar (19).

“The attack took place on bus route no. 40A from Anna Square to Avadi around noon on Wednesday. When the vehicle reached Thirumangalam, it halted at the Ambattur Estate bus stand. The Pachaiyappa’s college students were travelling on the footboard and the Presidency students were on two-wheelers,” a police officer said.
