Parents should not pressure their children into pursuing a specific branch of study. Instead, students should be encouraged to purse their choice of study as their career, said Mrs. Y.G. Parthasarathy, dean and director, Padma Seshadri Bala Bhavan Senior Secondary School.
Speaking at the Smt. Y.G. Rajalakshmi Parthasarathy Shashtiabdapoorthi Endowment Lecture 2013 on ‘Alma Mater Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow’ at the school’s premises in T. Nagar on Wednesday, Mrs. Parthasarathy said that apart from engineering and medicine, there are various other fields, including fashion technology and catering where youngsters have excelled.
It is important to encourage their talent, instead of pushing them in the direction their parents want, she said.
Mohan Rajan, chairman and medical director, Rajan Eye Care hospital, said the school should re-introduce one of its pioneer projects, ‘Each One and Teach One’, where every student of the school is given an opportunity to teach at least one person who is unable to go to school.
“The school turns ordinary children into extraordinary professionals by imparting life skills, discipline and encouraging courage and new ideas from the students. Such training from the school helps students gain confidence,” he said.
Scholarships were also given to five students of the school on the occasion. A first copy of a sport magazine, which was brought out by the school, was received by Dr. Rajan.
