Over a dozen energy-packed dance performances by different college teams livened up the Music Academy auditorium here on Wednesday, where the inter-college fest ‘Ignite 2011' of Loyola College was held.
This edition of Ignite came with new additions. Its theme read ‘Old foes, new stage' and participating teams could either dance to a theme or non-theme based performance.
The all-boys team from St. Joseph's College of Engineering brought in fun and laughter through its variety performance, with hip-hop taking a back seat. With a pitch dark hall as backdrop, the team opened its performance showing a man floating in air, which was achieved through “UV choreo”. Transforming into robots, imitating a crying baby and a love story were the other themes of their performance.
Non-theme based performance with hip-hop as the central theme dominated the dance competition. One of the teams from Women's Christian College brought in all the hip-hop styles such as popping and locking with suitable songs to go with the moves. “We missed a lot of inter-cultural events to concentrate on this event,” said Fan Meiling, one of the team members, adding that it was the result of five months of practice.
Emphasis on emotions
Stella Maris College team performed on the theme ‘Reincarnation of angels', where the emphasis was on jazz and different emotions. The wings of the angles and leather costumes were the added attraction of the team.
For those who were not very familiar with western dance styles, NIT, Tiruchi, pepped up the crowd with songs from films.
Actor Karthi was the surprise guest at the event. He made a brief appearance, shook a leg and delivered a few dialogues from his films to please the roaring crowd. “Be true to yourself, whether it is in love, with studies or your elders,” he said to the large gathering of students.
The host team gave a splendid show, especially the girls from Loyola College who the made the stage bewitching right from their make-up to costume and dance. The prize winners were Stella Maris College, Anna University and NIT, Tiruchi. Choreographers Jeffrey Vardon and Prasanna judged the event.
