March 04, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST - CHENNAI:

More educational institutions in the city are turning to solar power to offset the electricity tariffs that have undergone revision, effective December 2014.

The management of Ramakrishna Mission Students’ Home in Mylapore need not worry about electricity bills or power cuts anymore.

A 100 kilowatt (KW) rooftop solar plant has been commissioned on its premises.

Energy independence

SunEdison has donated a rooftop solar plant, launched on Tuesday, to power the hostel that houses 700 students.

Pashupathy Gopalan, president of Asia-Pacific for SunEdison, said the solar plant has given energy independence to the hostel management.

Satyajnanananda, secretary, Ramakrishna Mission Students Home, said the average power bill of the students’ home is around Rs. one lakh per month.

80% savings

The commissioning of the 100-KW solar plant is expected to bring down electricity expenses by more than 80 per cent, he said.

M. Saikumar, chairman and managing director, Tangedco, inaugurated the solar plant. Gautamanandaji Maharaj, adhyaksha of Sri Ramakrishna Math Centre, also participated.
