Two medical college students were arrested on charges of robbing a businessman. Gold and diamond jewellery was recovered from them.

Superintendent of Police, Kancheepuram Police District, C. Vijayakumar said the accused – Erode resident G. Sowmya (21), a second-year MBBS student at Meenakshi Medical College and her senior and boyfriend A. Manikandan (23) of Krishnagiri — stole the valuables from the house of Jayakumar at Munusamy Mudaliyar Avenue.

Sowmya was a tenant in the first floor of Mr. Jayakumar’s building.

They reportedly stole the valuables to help Manikandan clear his arrears.

Mr. Jayakumar and his family members would often leave the keys to the house with Sowmya so that any member of the family could easily enter.

A few months ago, Manikandan, a student from the 2009 batch, who had failed in his second year exams, asked Sowmya to help him arrange Rs. 1.50 lakh to clear the arrears. Sowmya suggested they steal the valuables from Mr. Jayakumar’s house and on Monday, they entered when the family was at a function nearby.

The duo opened the front door with a fake key, used an electric cutting device to break open the lock of the bedroom and took off with the portable personal safety locker that was in a wardrobe.

Manikandan took the locker to a remote place on the outskirts of Kancheepuram in a car owned by Sowmya and then removed the gold jewellery weighing around 130 sovereigns and four diamond ornaments.

During the investigation, the police found out that Manikandan used to call Sowmya frequently.

When questioned, he gave contradictory statements and subsequently, confessed to the crime
