Four teenage boys who are students of class IX at a Government School in Avadi went missing on Friday afternoon. Police said the boys have gone on a road trip with some money they managed to collect from their parents on the pretext of paying school fees.

Avadi police officials said Surya (14), Naveen Kumar (14), Subramani (14) of Kamaraj Nagar in Avadi and Hariharan (14) of Annamalai Nagar in Avadi are students of Government Higher Secondary School in Kamaraj Nagar. On Friday night, Naveen’s father Shankar lodged a complaint with the Avadi police that his son was missing along with three of his classmates.

Preliminary investigations revealed that that the four boys and their classmate Dinakaran (14) had decided to go on a trip. During the lunch break on Friday, the boys slipped out from school and went to their respective homes to collect money as per the plan.

“Subramani got some money from his grandfather Chokalingam after telling him that he was going with his friends for a relative’s wedding. Naveen took Rs. 500 from the pocket of his dad’s shirt which was hung on the bedroom door. The others told their parents they needed money for school fees,” said an investigating officer.

The four boys gathered at the Avadi railway station and called Dinakaran on his phone but he told them that he was unwell and could not make the trip, the officer added.

Surya had taken a mobile phone and his parents called him on it and demanded his immediate return.

However, he told them he was on a train to Arakonam and would come home but switched off his handset afterwards.

“We suspect the boys are heading to Bhopal where Surya’s uncle Sundarajan lives. Surya is familiar with the city as he has been there with his family. We have informed Sundarajan of the boys’ escapade and expect to hear good news from him,” the investigating officer said.
