A teacher was stabbed to death in the classroom of a private school here on Thursday, allegedly by a 15-year-old student who was upset at being repeatedly reprimanded by her for not doing well in studies.
R. Uma Maheswari (39), who had been teaching science and Hindi for close to a decade at the St. Mary's Anglo-Indian Higher Secondary School on Armenian Street in Parry's Corner, was sitting in the first floor room, for the IX A Hindi class, when the boy rushed in, slashed her throat and stabbed her in the abdomen and chest.
She was taken to a nearby private hospital, which referred her to the Government General Hospital. But she died on the way.
The murder happened around 10.50 a.m. According to Fr. Bosco Periyanayagam, a member of the school committee, the boy ran ahead of others into the classroom, where Ms. Maheswari was sitting in a chair waiting for the students. After approaching her on the pretext of wanting to drop rubbish into the bin, he took out a knife wrapped in a paper and attacked her.
According to a police official, other students who had followed him into the class raised an alarm on seeing the attack. Teachers from the staff room on the same floor ran into the classroom and overpowered the boy, who did not attempt to flee. Following information from the school, Esplanade police arrived and took custody of the boy.
“The boy has been studying in the school for the past five years and is regular but he did not study well. It is the practice of teachers to write remarks in the diary about the performance of the students. The teacher had made notes about his poor show,” Fr. Periyanayagam told reporters.
During questioning by police, the boy said he had recently seen the Hindi movie Agneepath and was influenced by the hero who takes revenge on those who falsely implicate his father. The boy had failed in both mathematics and Hindi. While the mathematics teacher had not scolded him, Ms. Maheswari had written remarks in his diary. This angered him.
The boy hails from an affluent family. A police official described him as a pampered child at home. “He was given Rs.100 as pocket money daily.”
Ms. Maheswari was a resident of Mandaveli and has two daughters.

Teachers should not simply write remarks for such students , teachers
should also try to understand the mental state of the students , their
family history and environment & boost them with psychological make up
for such students. Like wise they could be improved and achieve success
in their performance.
Time the Government ( almost non-existing everywhere) brings in a Law to imprison the Parents alongwith, while the child gets to go for rehabilitation at the Juvenile centre. And reduce the Age criteria of a Juvenile to 12 Yrs.
Enact a Law by Parliment to include, "The crime committed by the child should be treated as a Deemed act of the Parents".
Enact a Law by Parliament to include. "The age criteria of a Juvenile be 12 Years. In today's world, kids are no more kids after 10-12.
My heart for this family and all the teachers in the country. After the 3-4 Years in J/Centre, the Boy should be handed over to the Teachers family for compulsory adoption.
Dread, this news will embolden more kids to do something more deadlier---probably physical misbehaviour with the teacher, after watching our wonderful movies depicting this crude comedy.
Disgusting, the way we are responsible for our childrens upbringing. Ashamed.
appreciate the film industries and TV shows for poisoning the innocent minds, teaching them crime, murder, rape etc.
Our whole education system is at fault. Because as a society our thinking is at fault about the role and purpose of education . Today a school report card simplistically wraps up an entire human being in numbers . And because of our obsession with marks & rank, the numbers obtained by the child is made to spell status for him , success or failure for him , in the eyes of parents , teachers , peers , the society he lives in and thus even in his own self-esteem . This is the attitude we have in our society today and we all must ask who created this ethos in our society? What changed our thinking so much that education turns out to be just a ticket for wealth accumulation today ? Rememeber we are the same nation that preached the importance of spirituality to the world . Our ancient education system not only had helped create a wealthy society that attracted invaders , but also created health and well being in society . No wonder then to overpower India by changing the Indian way of life , it was first decided to break the back-bone of India -by doing away with our ancient but successful education systems that gave us our cultural & spiritual strengths . Hence today we all must again ask "is education all about marks & only a ticket to socio-economic success- & not about right thinking or good living "? Restricting education to only this aspect is a very limiting notion of the aim of good education. Many of us know it but we seem to act ignorant of the implications or we couldn't care less because we ourselves are engrossed in the race to wealth accumulation ! This episode should wake us all up . Shouldn't we voice our concern ? Good education , besides feeding just information for memorising & reproducing it for being summed up in numbers must focus more importantly on inculcating values in the child ; teaching self-management , developing intellectual strength and helping develop the art of deep & clear thinking . How many of these important paremeters matter in our society today and thus are imbedded in our current education system aped from the west?
As a teacher,My salutations to the Teacher for the greatest sacrifice she has made awakening this society.
Lets quickly see the crux of the problem:
* student does not get excited about his/her learning-Why?
* Teacher does not get sensitive to her students-the receptors while teaching-Why?
-Large Class room, teacher-student ratio
-Heavy syllabus and a lot of activities
* relationships-teacher/student and parent/child, teacher /parent is not properly nurtured
* Value education has to be caught by lived values than taught-- what are the values the student learns from home, school, society and media?
*How is the student's growth assessed? by mere marks? or by his all round developments? Are there other aspects of the student appreciated?
Whatever be the introspection-- One definite statement-the gruesome act has to be condemned-the act of a murder- That is an indicator of a decay in society
PARENTS-TEACHERS-EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM ,Please WAKE UP!!!!
Very Sad and disturbing incident. We cannot blame the Society or Film for this. It's all about the upbringing. We will not blame the environment if we have to keep our home clean. Parents need to take care of the needs of their children - not just the monetary needs but also psychological needs. Since the boy is from a affluent family, he has been given liberty to do his own things which led to this unfortunate incident. Hope the justice system in India works well in this case considering the boy's back ground, however I feel it will work on boy's favor than on the Teacher. No words could heal the loss of suffering family of the Teacher!!!
We are very sorry to here this HORRIBLE news.Teachers are other than parents they will be right about the student. Please don't obstruct teacher's,let them be on their path. Please advise the students to be obedient to the teachers or otherwise this incident will be applied to the parents also. Please parents ,don't support students like this. I'am also a student of 9th std studying in a private school. Please encourage all the students in positive thoughts.
Children's are pampered too much now a days, there should be someone to discipline students. This incidents seems to be well planned, brutual murder. He should be punished without any mercy so in future should be a lesson for others. My sincere condolence to Miss Umamaheshwari daugthers and family members. Would the Miss would ever though that day morning or to the last minute!!!
I have told all my teacher friends to be careful. I have taught tuition to one boy, who just could not grasp mathematics or Tamil told the parents to get the boy in dyslexia school.Nobody should become judgemental on why a person can't learn some subjects. In, college, mind you in college, I was asked to stand on a bench, in History class. I didn't like the subject at all. Now, I am reading history of British India, and relish it so much. Teachers can play havoc on the psyche of children. But, here, I think the boy was mentally affected. More scrutiny has to be done on his behaviour at home and among friends..
It's shocking and sad incident. My hearfelt condolences to bereved family of Mrs. UmaMaheswari. The Govt., Teachers, Parents, NGOs etc. have to find out immediate solution to curb this barbaric act not only in Schools but also in Colleges specifically in Professional Colleges and also in Social Societies. Daily Moral instruction classes must be introduced in all Schools/Colleges, "How to cleanse the Augean Stables' is the question hang before us? The authorities concerned seriously examine this issue and a viable solution to this chronic problem immediately.
As we go through this, there is another report about a girl student jumping from the second floor of her school building in Velacherry. The reason? quarrel with her friends! Please readers, realize the situation here, I think it is the PRESSURE, it is getting on them, We the parents, teachers, the society, every one literally have to play a major role here. 'TALK TO THE KIDS'. Even major international issues are solved by a meaningful meeting, and escalates in to a war, if approached emotionally! Talk to the Kids, understand their problems, appreciate their views, make them realize they are not alone and you are always with him in their fight against a competetive world. Most important make them accept failures as normal phase of life, give them the confidence that failure can be fought with and won, support him emotionally, never play the blame game! I don't like it, you don't like it, more important THE KIDS NEVER LIKE IT.
Its a very sad incident. Sorry to hear. Teachers are equal to God. When we are students, we criticize teachers. But in future we will come to know that all they have done are only for our future benefits. Children imitating like super heroes and other fancied characters in this age is common. Schools can teach discipline but it is parents' responsibility to look after their children's behavior and guide them in the right path. In other parts of the world there are filters available to restrict children from seeing unsuitable programs/content and they closely monitor what their children are into. I hate to say this but I believe this incident will create awareness to all the Parents..
This incident is very shocking. it creates insecurity between teachers.Education system must be changed ,including some counselling for students to overcome their stress and depression. RIP for Uma Maheswari!.
I am 20 now and I am glad I am out of school.15 years is an age when our ego, our identity ,our sense of worth are still developing and are at its most vulnerable. I acknowledge that even I have had hostile feelings towards my teachers..Many of them were unreasonably temperamental, as if they would vent all their domestic dissatisfaction in class in front of passive students who were at the receiving end. Perhaps they were powerless at home and a class of students was their only place where they could practice superiority- I dunno. If such is the case it is always the children whose ego they trample upon and gain unconscious satisfaction by continuously firing undeserving criticisms for every single mistake.Even though I am in a reputed college now and desire to have no connection to my school I still fear walking in the corridors of my school. We must remember that at the source of every violent act lies a deep seated fear of powerlessness and a primal urge to erase the cause of it.
Teacher should encourage and motivate children. They should be companionate towards children who are weak. They shouldn’t let them down they should take them into confidence. If there is a problem they should get down to the root cause and focus on ways to work on them instead of trod-dining them upon. They should build their mental stamina by pushing past the point of frustration. They should be instrumental to children with different abilities.
Gone are those days were teachers were treated as Angels. Today we get to hear how teachers are caught up in the act of moral turpitude and other disorderly conduct. Today it has become the human tendency that I show my vials of hate because I do not like the face, colour, blood or status of a particular person. This is highly reprehensive.
I'm an old student of St. Marys A I Hr Sec School, passed out in 1998. Felt very much sad hearing the news. It is time to rethink about the education structure, include more extra curricular activities and secular religion into the education system.
Your prayers are needed for the daughters of the Teacher.
All of you directly reached to the conclusion that boy's parents are responsible for the child behaviour. It is really sad that all of you have such thinking and posting comments without considering that how they are coping with this incident and about their child behaviour. It is really sad.
Its a very shocking and disturbing incident! RIP Uma Maheshwari
1. first of all, the main reason is the media who leaks out all secrets that is order of the educational system to public.
2. Any decisions made by the educational dept. must be sent to schools only without informing media (for eg. like till 8th std is all pass , teachers should not punish students and also about the fees structure etc.)
3. government should increase the position of the teachers before public .
4. i dont say all the teachers are good. but still because of one or two undedicated teachers, all the teachers should not be blamed. Government and media should stop leaking any unwanted news related to educational field.
5. Government should give back the power of punishment back to teachers.(but along with the punishment list i mean the punishment which doesnot harm the students mentally or physically up to an extent.) with the full support of the parents.
6. This order (till 8th standard pass should be taken away).
7. I request the government please kindly consider this.
Some action must be taken on this boy so t hat henceforth students will
have some fear. As a teacher we have all rights to correct them when
they go wrong since we are consisdered as second parents for them and
school is t heir second home. Government is only to be blamed for giving
such freedom and rights for the students to go against teachers. Now
what security we teachers have in this job. Teaching job is a noble
profession now terrorism also is in act.
Fell like quitting my job at present.
Whats happened has happened..We can't change a thing.......Stop blaming and becoming paranoid. Lets all join together and fix the problem.I know its terribly sad,but lets fix things...lets take a decision to tell ourselves and our young ones the difference between right and wrong, evil and good, the importance of patience, and about actions and its consequences. Lets tell them that hardships are the way of life and we should strive hard for our successes.Being a teacher myself....I strongly believe that this is what Ms Uma would have wanted in all of her students....To be good citizens and even better human beings. She is a true martyr.
Very sad to know about this dreadful incident. There was a time the student was afraid of teachers, now there is insecurity among the teachers. Also children who dont do well in academic should be encouraged by giving coaching, counselling and guidence from their elders.
This incident is a shocking eyeopener. A lot of thought processes have been generated. I think parents and teachers should stop forcing kids to get good marks, everyone is different and talented differently. It is to identify this talent and improve on it. There is always two sides to a story and this is no different.
There should be more frequent parent teacher meetings and there must be a code of punishment given by each school and each student and teacher should abide by it with the support of parents.
I urge all schools to have enough extracurricular activities to take the mind off the stress. Classes of yoga or cricket should be there at least once a week. Doctors and engineers alone are not successful and this mad rush has to stop.
The teacher has suffered the ultimate penalty of death and that students living life is never going to be the same hereafter.
Technology has improved communication so much all around us, but, in schools, it is as if they are still 1950s.
The schools have a one-way communication system. The principal speaks and parents have to keep quiet. PTAs are a farce. If a parents talks about the psyche of the ward, then, the kid will forever be blacklisted by the school, and informally, the kid will be kept out of all extra-curricular activities.
I am yet to know of a school, which uses technology to assess the teaching efficacy of their teachers. In their race to achieve 100 per cent results, the teachers identify students who are likely to fail and they start treating them as enemies.
If you want to prevent such shocking incidents, the first step should be the banning of advertisements of schools which boast about their 100 per cent success in +2 results and about their centums.
Absolutely horrible to listen a student stabbing his teacher, the punishment given to him should be so severe that no one else in the society should ever dare to do such things. I noticed that someone stating that the school have stories about students getting beaten up, I would like to inform all those to please think about the specific incident as such stories are common to all schools because there are notorious / pampered kids everywhere. As a past pupil of this school and having studied for 10 years, I would seldom accept to take this incident against the school. I would like to point this mistake against all people who move closely with him. Also please think of the impact done because of this activity:- a) Two girl children losing their mother (how can the killer's parents compensate this one). b) A 150+ year cherished school losing its image before the public c) Fear in the minds of the teachers and students who currently study in the same school.
it is very shocking. If a teacher has posted good remarks against the student, whether the parent are the student recoganize that.no.not all. We are all thinking that a teachers job to groom the student become an I.A S. Officer,Soft ware Engineer,or to work in NASA. It is overambitious parents and students. If their performance is really poor they will not accept.Money makes them to think like this.Pathetic teachers. The management should be taken to task and severe action should be taken against the management. It is also shockin while readind the comments on thisbissue that the otherside should also be enquired. WHY? A human can be murdered for the bad performance in school, I am in disbeleif that we are living in india. Such kind of incidents are in U.S where students are allowed guns fortunately our lawmakers are not following U.S in this issue.
It is very sad and shocking to hear such news. Poor Parenting, pshycological impression by television, cinema and advertisements, improper education system , etc... everything now taken the life of a teacher. It is a national shame. It is a great loss to the family of the teacher, reputational loss to the institution and so on.... It makes me feel very sad and making me to think that my kids growing in this environment. I pray God Almighty . May the soul rest in peace.
This is the price India has to pay for getting too westernized. Madras was once a very good city for education is now witnessing a change of culture for the worst. This type of change is not good for any city. Parents have to bring up the kids with the right attitude and emotions. This situation unfortunately should be a eye opener to the city. God bless the departed soul.
It is a sad event in the history of Indian Schools. We parents should take care in inculcating morale values to children. We have to teach good habits to our children. Our children are living in a condition which can easily spoil them. Again i emphasize that it is the responsibility of parents to develop values among our children. I pray God for the departed soul. I wish to convey my condolences to the family members of the teacher.
It is surprising that so many people wish to blame the teacher or education system for being so strict. One thing that needs to be understood: The education system is largely the same it had been decades ago. It's an argument often heard when people want to change it. And yet such incidents weren't commonplace. A single incident cannot be used to vilify a system that has given leaders to the world in many sciences.
Another thing is many people are blaming affluent parents. Please understand that parents giving 100 Rs. pocket money need not necessarily be affluent. Please don't make generalisations without having proper information at hand. My parents are quite well off, yet I used to get Rs. 5 in school per day (2000's) Does that make my parents poor? The problem lies with society represented today, in popular culture. Parents do not realise the effect a single hour on the internet can have various effects on a kids mind. Mobiles, TV... Condolences to the teacher's family.
The young teacher's terrible end is undoubtedly an extremely tragic incident and no amount of words could bring back a precious life that was snuffed out, all of a sudden. Without taking sides, a layman's psychological analysis of the murder and the apparent reasons that prompted the teenager to take the extreme step, could perhaps throw light on some startling aspects of our education system. Basically, teachers and their ilk ought to realise that every student is not precocious and that it requires an unbelievable amount of patience to turn a truant and reluctant student into a diligent one. Also, one should never overlook the fact that just like history, which is all along a winner's perspective, it is the successful student's views that would interest people. Hence, the proverbial 'backbencher' would possibly never receive his due from the 'powers be.' Most importantly, the present-day curriculum takes an extreme toll on the students, who are constantly being urged to excel.
Personally I hate the film makers whose films depicts VIOLENCE. 9 Years ago , a incident I saw near a CO-ED school ,which ascertained my thoughts , that violence in films affects the tender ones.Again I repeat film makers , bear this incident in your mind, say a big no VIOLENCE and VULGAR scenes to your films.Don't spoil the kids for your own benefits.I repeat stop VIOLENCE &DISPLAYING WEAPONS in films.I am 34 years old ,till date I have not seen a knife, sword, pistol (other than museums), such was the society and the films during my adulthood. Now I do not understand how a 15 year old can procure a knfie, hide it in hands, plan for the right moment and knew how to stab to take the teacher's life. Is it taught at home, roads, schools ? NO!!!. Media and the parents are the TOTAL responsibility for this incident.
one of the best teacher in school .. we miss her a lot . . R.I.P mam ...
To the immediate family of teacher R. Uma Mahaeswari, and to her faculty colleagues at St.Mary's, my prayers and thoughts are with you all following the shocking senseless cold blooded murder. The student's parents are accountable. Intolerance to this degree can and should be traced back to the environment he had at home. It cannot be blamed away on one movie. In the US, there have been several cases of violence with students or intruders bringing in weapons. This is the first I have heard of in India, and I hope it is the last. May God bless the courageous teachers and school staff everywhere. Teachers with experience are drawn to stay in that professional line not for money, but for the selfless service and the satisfaction of shaping student minds. Teachers who provide tough love with developmentally useful feedback for students and parents should be put on a pedestal and celebrated and honored. Many parents are too quick to conclude their child is victimzed by a teacher.
This act has made the teacher's children motherless - who can fill that place.A badly brought up boy has done this. Parents besides meeting the material requirements and comfort of their children have more duty and responsibility towards them. Many parents do not realise this. When both are employed, life goes mechanical. Films give details of how to commit suicide are to kill others - everything in the name of reality.Which part of human body is vulnerable is shown clearly.
This is really a shocking incident. This poorly reflects the upbringing of the boy by parents. The influence of violence(kolaveri) shown in movies is a major influence. These days the private schools charge exhorbitant fees from students but they do not have counsellors to counsel weak and problem children. Sad state of affairs! RIP UMA MAHESWARI
This is a great school I know since 60 years and it had produced
students highly successful in life. The current incident is a shocking
news for all. If the accused student's name is released, it should not
cause any harm to the prestige of his parents, who are innocent. They
might be in terrible grief for what their son had done and spoiled his
career. However, is it correct for the school, TV channels & police
etc keep the student name a top secret. The boy was perhaps highly
sensitive and such boys in the past were found to discontinue studies,
commit suicide, attack the teacher etc due to disturbed condition.
This is cause of lack of proper communication between parent and child, teachers and child. I saw many teachers treat students like prisoners and criminals, they won't think this is just education need some more support to make them understand they never . they will never love and teach them and make them to understand. But i still feel sad about her.
AFJ Anand has rightly mentioned. Education is not end of life and Stupid systems in India forces includes parents/teachers and society at large force students to read or mug books to pass or score high in exams. That is not life at all. Indian students need practicle real life study to survive in society after come out from school.
In a world where children see violence is a means to accomplish an
end, they resort to violence. The demands parents put on children to
be academically successful make children view the teacher as the
reason why there parents are not happy with them. That the teacher is
no longer imparting knowledge but the person making their life so
difficult and holding back their advancement. The teacher is viewed as
the bane of the student’s existence and the reason for such sorrow,
stress and corporal discipline at home. The aggressive student resorts
to violence the passive student resorts to suicide.
The country which celebrates teacher’s day has seen a changing of
values as the influence of mass media and high academic expectations
collide. It is a sad day, a teacher has died, a young boy has ruined
his life, two families are devastated and a community has been
traumatised.
I state the obvious because I don’t have a solution, I am just
saddened by the immense loss to so many lives looking a
Where is our society going?? It is really shocking to see this kind of
incidents happening in our country specifically south as I feel that
we are still more sober and conservative. The country which celebrates
teacher's day is encountering activities like this. It is shameful. My
deepest condolence to the teacher and her family.
The reporter has mentioned that the boy is from affluent family
indicating that he will be out of the law punishment very soon. Law
will find a loop hole not to punish him. Have we not seen an incident
few year before about a medical student chopping his junior to pieces.
He is happily roaming outside.
My condolences for the family of the deceased who was in a noble
profession.
It is very shocking and upsetting to see such a scenario happened in
the state capital of Tamil Nadu.
Only a few institutions do bother about the psyche of a student. Where
as it should be given more impetus on psychological counseling.
The Society,Parents,Teachers all are equally responsible in a
child/student development.
The public in large are not bothered about the quality of the movies,
they just want some entertainment, many of them have
detrimental effects on juveniles.
Almost all children are given ultra modern toy guns and war video
games! What and where this will lead too?
Giving a wrong input and expecting a good result is practically not
possible.Collective steps should be taken to avoid such happenings.
Mr.AFJ Anand, your stance and opinion is absolutely right.
This boy has done wrong and it cant be changed .I am sorry ,my condolence to her family.I just want to say that teachers should not be harsh to students, infact teachers should be role models ,they should always motivate students instead of writing remarks and insulting them infront of other students, they should inspire students instead of getting angry on them, teachers should nourish the latent potential of a child.Every child has some special ability to do wonders.Parents, teachers and friends together help a individual to create those wonders.I am a student and i have gone through this pain of getting remarks but i took it as a challenge and later i proved my teachers wrong. My advice to other students would be not to commit this kind of crime, instead take those remarks as a challenge and prove your teacher wrong and make them feel that you are worth of doing something.
please stop making films. Now there is no necessity to watch films because of which childrens get affected.
Only spiritual, music, sports, reading books is enough.
Government of India should pass a resolution in stop making films.
Absolutely shocking!! Time to realize where this modern day culture is taking us?? On the path of violence, destruction, immorality, disrespect..and we say we are progressing. Hope this incident gives some sense to the parents about their upbringing style and to the censor board which is barely censoring anything in the movies now a days, be it the violence or the sexual contents. At times it looks like 20th century was far better than the 21st century....Really shocking!
So far this kind of bizzare incidents are limited to Western contries and never heard happend in India. Since the boy is admiting that he was influenced by a movie, we can not ignore the fact of the lopsided bad effect of movies to good. Thanks to the movies, media and internet.
Society should take this incident as a wake up call and nip in the bud.
I have been a teacher at the university level. What I have learned through experience may also apply to school teaching. There are two major points I want to make. First, it is the mediocre or below-average student who needs special attention. If they don't get it, they would get totally frustrated and become psychological cases. Second, beneficiaries of the "quota/reservation" usually believe they have special rights, for example for high grades in exams even if they do badly. They often gang up and also get help from political quarters to bully teachers into giving them high grades. They can resort to violence for this purpose, and also resort to abuse of the special laws enacted for their protection. Teachers usually have to succumb, because the establishment cannot or will not offer them any protection.
Very shocking incident indeed. Shocking to see it happen in India. My
deepest sympathies with the teacher's family. I feel that both
teachers and parents are to be blamed for such a situation. The
competition to succeed is so bad that parents force the kids to study
harder. Teachers push the students to the core. Its the pressure which
makes them take these kind of irrational decisions. A 9th standard
student does have the capacity to think what is good and what is bad,
however there is also this boiling rage at that age. This energy
should be harnessed and directed towards proper direction. Guidance is
required, just reprimanding a student does not help.
I passed out from the same school in 2002 and its really shocking and sad to hear about this incident. My deep condolence to the teacher’s family and the school staff. I pray that God will be their comfort as the family members go through this tough time. I sometimes wonder and think, why this student had to go to the extreme of killing his teacher and what made him do so?. But Generally..... I always respect the fact that teachers are sometimes strict with the students for their well being but it can turn worse for themselves as in this case. I feel that teachers can be strict but not fearful people who try to control the students. The students should be able to look at a teacher as a friend and also respect them and such a balance is very much required by the teachers among modern day Indian school children.
Hats off to all teachers who fabricate and formulate many young lives!!! May God bless you all.
This is very shocking. My sympathies with the Teacher whose only cause is to ensure a good student is groomed on merit. And this boy should be punished and more than that the parents should be taken to task for being so careless as to what their son is upto. I dont understand why a 9th std student gets Rs.100 as pocket money. As a parent you are seeding bad ideas from that very act. The government should do something for the protection of teachers who do a noble job all the time.
In many analysis of this incident the role of media, the violence portrayed and its access and impact on the children is a matter of consideration. I think the children should be taught to analyse the good and bad of the media content right from the school level. Empowering the children to analyse and choose the right program needs more effort from the education and family front. Subjects on media literacy right from the school level as in other states like Kerala could be one of the ways of addressing such issues in future. When media has a vast impact on every aspect of our lives we are least bothered to study it in a proper sense.
(oru panai sorrukku oru sorru patham). This is horrifying! If a student has a problem with the teacher, thereare millions of ways to tackle it.. My deepest condolences to the family of Umamaheshwari.Very Shame for entire community. All these problems are mostly because of the parents Attitude. why still the media & newspapers not showing the culprit face and his parents faces.
Actually I being a student in this school many years back, feel sorry for this innocient teacher. But in reality there its only the functioning of the school that needs to be regulated. Now a days schools are just a money making institution instead of being an educational institution. Schools make money selling uniforms, school kits etc to students, which did not happen those days. Change the way school functions and make students understand they are here to study and not to follow movie actions.
My heartly Condolence to the teacher's family, and this is the warning to all the parents to watch their child's behavior.
I'm studying 10th and I'm forced to write in the column.
Students are given heavy burden now-a-days.We are not encouraged to
express our views. We are banged to score high marks but marks don't
determine you.If you are writing remarks daily, then it is not going
to
encourage you but it only brings inferior thoughts in you. Parents
don't take the remarks easily, they also pressure you to do a better
progress.A student of this age can't bear such burden.
If you talk in a kind or polite manner, then in encourages the man in
you to do something at it's best. So, I kindly request the teachers who
read this column to be soft so that is going to encourage the
students.
If he fails, there must be a reason behind his failure. If someone is
going to ask him the reason and mistakes with some concern,he will
surely realize his mistake and I'm sure he is going to rectify that
mistake the very next time.
Miles to go...
Matha pitha guru deviam is the saying. If Parents have been playing good parenting role , possibly guru would not have had this done to her.
Very unfortunate incident. Parents partly should take responsibility but as society we all should, as parent and teacher, take responsibility in being a role model to our clidren especially in toning them and accepting what they are and not being pushy for our dreams and our aims.
Some teacher's still behave like goons in school using violence. Why
doesn't india care about that?
Every teacher always takes care about their students bright future. That much of take care by teachers have all the rights on their students. Now and ever and forever.
A Teacher has fallen doing her duty. A young boy has succumbed to film producers' greed and to the sadism of a violence consuming public. No words or sympathy will bring back the young lady, a mother of two, whose life was cut short with a suddenness that is hard to imagine. And worse still, her killer is a child for whose academic progress she had been showing concern.
Before we accuse the boy for his violence, I would say we must not forget the criminality of film producers whose contribution to violence in society is increasingly taking on palpable proportions. We must also punish the father or both parents for letting loose upon society a pampered and spoilt child.
The govt must seriously consider banning violence in films and all parties must come forward with a bill to ensure it becomes unlawful to show violence and sex in films.
these kind of movies & games must be banned to prevent further
accident.
The private hospital referred her to a Govt Hospital??? Why? So she could die on the way???
If a school student commits suicide, it is that child's fault. If the student murder's a teacher, it is also child's & parent's fault. But repeatedly this is happening across the country. It should be analysed that these incidents are happening with respect to education system. They are children. They are like the mud which is used to create pots. The one who create the pots are responsible for the shape of the pot. Here, one can see that not one person is involved in moulding a child i.e. parents but even the teachers play a major role. Apart from it there are many influences on children which needs to be considered. Other than sleeping & eating children now a days spend their most of the time related to academics. Just blaming his parents & that child is a foolish thing. The root cause needs to be found out & try to change that. I too feel sorry for that teacher & for that kid toooo.. Let her soul RIP...
Movies are to blame. As a principal of a college, I realize that the movies that kids see is a very bad influence on them as they try to
emulate things from the movies. Strict rules on who can see movies
should be provided along with the title.
Sad for teachers as they are not able to do their job properly.
Very sad news. As a parent I sympathise for the teacher. As a parent, I sympathise for the child too. This arrogance can't happen overnight for a 15 year old boy. There should have been some indications in his behaviour. I sincerely feel that teachers could have noticed it and made him all right by putting in the right track. When we all really feel for Ms. Uma, we can not ignore then aspect of how much the parents of the child would have felt for his crime, the punishment he is going to undergo and the partition they will face with their child. Our poor edu system concentrates only on the marks to be scored in each subjects and for getting centum. We are not so much so much worried about theexpectations and feelings of tender hearts. Counselling is lacking in many a school. This is a lesson for parents like us that beating and scolding alone will not solve the problems related to school children We all need EMPATHY. I stronglt suggest that this child should be treated psychologically
So sad of the incident. My hearty condolence to the teacher's family. The boy should be seriously punished.
Its horrible for a student at the age of 15 to take such a hasty decesion. Who will take care of the two daughters of Maheswari even though he amy be jailed. I am afraid India is also in the row of other countries where students used to bring gun and knife to the school. But personally i feel that all these problems are mostly becuase of the parents. Parents want to enjoy and make their son to be happy and they never bother about his carrer. Poor teachers has to suffer . I am too a teacher and i have seen very few parents monitoring the progress of their wards.
As a psychologist I would say that we should stop playing the blame game and look at the issues behind this horrendous act. This is the tip of the ice-berg and there are many students who are emotionally disturbed because of the attitude of their parents, teachers and the society at large. Our so called education system focuses only on imparting knowledge or information to an individual rather than transforming him to face the realities of life. Our system is not holistic and does include emotional development. A school should be a place where a student finds his natural talent, his potential, his ability but in our system he is forced to play a role which he is not capable of. Psychological counseling should be given to students to overcome their stress. I would say that this generation is mishandled by parents and educationists. Unless they change their attitude and ways they are grooming a dangerous generation. WE should take collective responsibility for this act.
The boy should be questioned by psychiatrist and not by men in uniform .
The parents should be questioned regarding the behavior of the boy at
home It is indeed sad that a school with 150 years of good reputation is
subjected to a incident like this.
It is really a unfortunate incident. No parents can be blamed for this type of gruesome incidents, wholly, but partly they are also be held responsible. The main culprit in this incident certainly is CINEMA,which was once upon a time, helped the people to entertain, but now the cinema plays a big part in spoiling the society. The present cinema has all the vulgarity and all sort of violence.
And when we blame the parents and the present day Cinema, one should not ignore the present education system,so they too have the responsibility in grooming the student generation.
The TN Govt can compensate the bereaved family because it has the resources.
This is yet another milestone, in the path of destruction.
It is a sad incidence for sure. What drives kids to take such extreme steps and what empowers them to execute such a gruesome act? Is it parental pampering or built up frustrations which do not find its way out or influence of random movie acts? Parents certainly have to develop their pupil while school need to provide opportunities beyond report card for her/him to perform by channeling young energy/frustration.
On the other side of the story the teacher died while being taken from >Private hospital to Govt Hospital. Why was she directed to the govt. hospital? was it because it was a police case? Would she have survived if treated at the private hospital? This again raises the behavior of hospitals and concerned authorities towards such incidences. General respect for other human being/human life seems to be lacking in both parts of the story. Question is when do we realise this as a society? It probably has to start at individual level.
I am very sad to hear this news and my deepest condolence to the teacher's family. Daughters lost their mother and husband lost her beloved wife. the student needs to be hanged for his behaviour. She lost her life for her profession. Government and school authorities need to take care of the family. No one can replace her but atleast financial support needs to be provided to the family.
Is it surprising that the physical violence is a response to the emotional violence? Let's be honest: didn't you want to murder a few of your own school teachers?
From all the comments I could see a lot of them blaming the media for spoiling the kids.People always quote media for their wrong actions, for instance I have never heard people quoting movies like Anniyan, A Wednesday for the good things they do, if any. A child's first influence is their upbringing media and environment comes next.Restriction and punishments are the only way for good upbringing, most parents don't/never understand this.
A society will develop only when the education system is good. For this incident the sole responsibility lies on the Government, both past and present. Second parents should accept the mistakes done by their children, they should not protect their children which will motivate them further instead of correcting. Next the films and televisions telecasts should be monitored, people make money violence. They never think of the after effects. I really wonder what the TRAI is doing?
At least in the coming days everyone should stand together to fight for justice...
Any good reason that the Private Hospital referred them to Govt Hospital. If they had atleast provided first aid, she might be alive now. Every ones rage is pointed towards the boy, parents and the educational system. But forgot the basic humanitarian help to the victim.
@Mr.Jaya prakash EXCELLENT.. EXCELLENT.. observation.when every 1 is blaming. you gave a new thought which i am sure makes the happening very clear.you were very right in asking don't put extra pressure in kids.I totally agree with you.i ask and request every one to read the comment of Mr.Jaya prakash gives more clear idea to the problem of today.
It is very difficult to imagine what "rage" justified this action. Things are changing in schools. The current generation will not respond to classical ways. It is important to reform the boy and prosecute the parents to send the right message. I hope this process is not interfered with by -Anybody-.
highly regrettable and shocking......
Police should Identify Identity of Culprit of the person who killed the
Teacher as well the Identity of person who committed murder in crescent
engg College Recently ...& Punish them...that would act as Deterrent to
others...
I was shocked when the news first broke out on TV. I couldn't believe a kid as young as 14 could do such a horrendous act. Hard to digest and even imagine.
My deepest condolences go to the family of the victim. Having said that, the way some teachers treat their students sometimes verge on the obnoxiously nasty to inhumanly barbaric. Teachers, I myself am a Lecturer in London, have a responsibility to treat students with care, affection and empathy. Teachers must
understand that children vary in their intelligence. No single person in the humankind is dumb. Every person has unique strengths and intelligence in a certain area - could be music, sports, linguistics, business, social activity, maths, science..... I believe that the teaching community should help students. If one is weak in maths, doesn't mean he/she is dumb in everything. Or else, we wouldn't have had a Tendulkar, or an Ilayaraja, or a Mother Teresa. Teachers would do well do remember that. Thanks.
This proves the point that "RIGHT" attention to a kid is all the more important and failing to which such incidents happen.
Gone are the days were teachers stand next to mother and father and before the god in the iine of Hierarchy. I had studied in a school which is very well known for disciplining students from a southern district of TN. We were caned and disciplined for not performing and for indiscipline. This gruesome act should be blamed fully on the parents and the system since nowadays teachers who discipline students are unwanted and troubled by various authorities. Like Carrots & Sticks approach in the corporate world, caning should be also part of the curriculam. Students should be thought if you err you will be punished.
Today it is a teacher, tomorrow it will be a superior in the office and day after tommorrow it will be the parents. The day is not far off if we dont take punitive measures in the system.
Madha, Pitha, Guru, Deivam.
This are the lines on which we grew up. 50% development of a person is
attributed to Mother/Father and the other 50% to the Teacher. I don't
know where are the moral values of Indians going nowadays? Cinemas are
just portraying what is actually happening in the real world, it isn't
that they are directing people to act rudely. People should take care
of their children in bringing up this moral values in them, else it
would not be far the days where we would see the horrifying incidents
of American schools happening in our country schools.
The students have to be well groomed from their houses to avoid such
kind of incidents in the public which will also set an example to
other children. I really sympathize for the parents of the kid who was
involved in this gory murder.
Dear Mr.Jaya Prakash,Agree with with your valiable comment. But dont expect ever body to comment the way we like. Then what is the point in inviting views by way of commenting. These are individual views based on individual perceptions which needs to vary for obvious reasons. To quote your own words
" After all no two human are same"
Let us keep on comenting.
I do not blame politicians or parents :: a 15 year old is a Teenage who has understanding about everything .
These kind of action result from excessive showing of violent content in all TV shows movies where killed is shown as a PLay ... Media enacting the roles as in murders makes a person think that killing does not mean much. There must be strict guidelines for child content, abusive content. In a way that children have knowledge about the violence but do not become casual about violence and accept it as a part of life . When accepted this leads to crimes.
Various reasons can be attributed to an incident like this. Any behaviour has precedents and is not usually isolated. Readers, including myself, and people who have commented above do not really know the antecedents to such a destructive behaviour. Having been in the education system in India, I know the rigors of it. Staff student ratio, inability to perform and hence cope with feedback from teachers etc could lead to disastrous results.I now consult in mainstream schools in Ireland and am quite familiar with teaching methods here. Well trained school therapists & counselors have a huge role to play in school systems, and in India neither Education personnel nor parents have really understood the role/need for allied healthcare professionals in the school systems. An incident like this should genuinely persuade school managements to link with agencies and monitor emotional and mental well being of students so that all vulnerable children receive some help.
It is bad incident ,boy needs to be punished for his activities but at the same time we should not spread the news and keep on discussing about it ,its better to stop discussing on this if it continues there is chance for other kids to adopt to it.
The student had been inspired by the film he said. These types of films shouldn't be made which put negative thoughts in the minds of people.
shock to hear such this news, first of all parents should be guided properly to their childrens. all are because of latest movies with new design stories. students my advise is stop watching movies be a good student.
In a civilized society the grooming of younger ones is the equal
responsibility of parents, teachers and the society. During our school
days, members of society, totally unconnected to us in anyway, would
ask us if found outside during school hours as to what we were doing
instead of attending classes? So we had the fear of elders at home,
teachers at school and members of society at other places. Now
everything is gone. It is the duty of parents to domesticate (as they
were domesticated by their parents)their children before unleashing
them on the unsuspecting society. The two girls had been deprived of
their mother, for what crime or sin they committed?
The boys parents should pay the blood money to the Victims Family. Teachers cannot be blamed for their corrective actions on their students and they have every right. The boy himself become villanious by seeing movies which clearly shows his wrong path and he is not matured enough to think about the impacts of what he is doing. We would pray for the victim & family.
I am old student of St.Marys Higher Secondary School- Armenian street Chennai, Its was of great joy to study in this institution with meteculous teachers and there curriculum, Quite shocking to hear this incident. Unimaginable !!!!. At first my sincere condolences to the family members. Secondly its all pointing on the parent by naturing there child in today's media world, with hifi electronic devices & pocket money. I Pray, May the good Lord God give this family, strength for the loss of there loved ones. Moses Prakash Raj / K.S.A - Riyadh
This is a disgusting incident that had ever happened.I feel government should take care of her two children.
My Deep Condolence to teacher Uma Maheswari’s Family. Tamil Nadu CM. J. Jayalalitha should help and support Uma Maheswai’s two daughters. Tamil Nadu govt. should conduct regularly Anti-Depression / Frustration camp to all schools students.(L.K.G - +2)
Well, It is time we learn to handle kids better and help them vent emotions in a better way. Wonder how many kids out there have pent up negative emotions like this. Its just sad!
In India everything revolves around money and no Value for Culture, Respect for Teachers or anything. They will talk all bad about USA and still aspire to live and work in USA.
Now what will be the punishment for the act of this Student ?? At this young Age how this child has been moulded into this Image. In USA they have Guns but still they are safe, but this one is a Kitchen knife purchased from a nearby shop with a real intention and well planned Brutal Murder.
And our Indian Media System propagates differently, one saying that this Boy is from a Affulent family and was pampered and given Rs.100 everyday as pocket money, the other says from Daily Labourer's family. Which one to be Believed ? Again they will say he is Muslim and not Hindu and only in Christian School. Why they hide certain facts ? Again a problem of Corruption inside the Media. Vandalisim and Goondaism !!! Shame on India and is still "Uncivilized and Semi-Barbaric" good example proven again.
Very sad to hear this incident. This is due to strictly lack of good morals and characters... these habits should not have been cultivated or encouraged at the early stages of childhood...
Avoide giving childrens pocket money, mobile, internet, ipad,iphone...
It is very sad to see such incidents in a reputed school. I personally feel that the boy had been suffering from some psychological disorder and had not been noted either by parents or teachers. I feel that some kind of medical examination along with psychological consultation should be conducted in each and every school and help students in relieving stress and mental disorder. May her soul rest in peace.
These days teachers are hired to extract 'performance' from students and management exists to extract money from parents. The individual called student is not respected only for his performance(mostly marks). Such incidents do happen.
However, the schools of 80's and 70's do not have such incidents because students are usually crushed and beaten to submission. These days students are more indepandent.
In the larger perspective the society is responsible for this act.We usually glorify crimunal acts in media, film,TV serials however we are are not showing the agony experienced by crimanals after the act. This should be highlighted more than actual act. Apart from this our educational system to be changed from memory test to knowledge based.
Very sad trend in teacher taught relationship; pity affluent parents have NO time to advise kids, but PAMPER with money money !
ALSO the ref. to cinema world by the boy makes it clear our actors and producers MUST be more cautious in projecting villain scenes.
Future teachers will just take class and go away unconcerned about the knowledge gained by pupils; Parents of the boy MUST compensate by huge amount to educate the children of murdered teacher; also sends signal to the rich parents about need to supervise kids. God help the system improve with more ethical values and behaviour.
I'm not condoning this by any means but I'm not surprised. My comments are not in reagrd to this incident but about teaching in general.
Teaching in India has to change significantly in terms of expectations and also rampant verbal and physical abuse of students. Parents are the main culprits exerting endless pressure and giving the school carte blance to somehow get the student to score high marks, come what may, so they just just memorize and regurgitate. We really undermine the students confidence and frustrate them. They are forced into careers they are unhappy with. The mantra is to just get a job and earn money, little else.
The educational institutions should train teachers to be inspirational, not feared. That is why this country produces nothing, we just are good labourers for western innovation. Lets take a leaf out of their educational systems, there is alot of good there.
If we dont change the system, more of this is bound to occur. The country will not progress.
Very sad to hear such an incident.
In India Movies much influence people on their thoughts and Actions. The Government should stop certifying any movies showing Voilence and the word VOILENCE should be precisely defined under Law.
Also, people should get awareness and recover from being influenced by Movies.
"During questioning by police, the boy said he had recently seen the
Hindi movie Agneepath and was influenced by the hero who takes revenge
on those who falsely implicate his father." -- there you go. I'm not
saying censor cinema, but if every single movie teaches the exact same
thing, there's not much else to learn, is there?
This boy should be tried as an adult and made an example to other
students, parents, and schools. Unfortunately, the movie-makers will
still have a field day.
I had heard of such happenings in developed countries and was thankful that India hadn't come to such a state yet. Now,I can no longer be proud of the fact that India is a country where we venerate our teachers next only to our parents.Teachers are the masons who lay the foundation of our lives by educating us and correcting our mistakes,to help us evolve into better human beings. If this is the outcome for them doing their duty, who knows, the next time we may hear of children taking a knife to parents for reprimanding them on doing something wrong.I shudder to think of a society where teachers and parents abstain from correcting the mistakes of children, for fear of retaliation. Is this the price of development? The freedom to take the law in your own hands just because something has not worked in your favour?I am writing this with a heavy heart not knowing how children will grow up without constructive criticism from their teacher, for how will they learn if their mistakes are not corrected
Very sad for the teacher. However, teaching community should learn some lessons from this, they should stop embarrasing students in the name of education.
Though it is sad that someone lost their beloved one, this sort of
outpouring is not seen when children are killed at the hands of so
called teachers. Are the teachers expecting all children to be great
at studies? Ain't they taught to identify students with learning
disabilities? Are the teachers expecting students to live with the
violence unleashed in class rooms? I take pity at people who say that
corporal punishment is required. The teachers know that corporal
punishment is never going to do any good since they are taught about
it from day one when they study B.Ed. My heart goes out to millions of
students who are victims of unbearable violence unleashed on them on a
daily basis. The so called learning is offering rot learning which is
not equipping them with any skills required in life other than the
conditioning to accept injustices present in the society.
Heartbreaking news. It is a duty of the parents to keep a watch on their
kids. In a congregation like schools, it is practically not possible to
check if any student has weapons. On the same token, teachers should not
give harsh treatment to students also. Gone are the gurugul days. If
some one does not study, it is up to his parents to worry.
These episodes are more common in the developed world and it is unfortunate that
it is now happening in India. One should also look at the mental status of the
student carefully before judging him one way or the other. The school has a
responsibility in identifying such problems early and providing for the security of
teachers and students alike. Our nations condolences should be presented to the
family of the deceased teacher.
There was a movie in the 60's called 'To Sir With Love'.
I want to ask the school management to make this movie compulsory viewing for teachers. If possible, ensure that the movie is seen by teachers and students together, beginning of every term.
Giving capital punishment or treating the kids like criminals is not going to be the answer - Both the parents, grandparents, school & teachers are responsible for this. Parents should be counseled to stop over reacting for kid's progress in education. Grandparents should not be left in 'old age homes' & even while 'in-home' should take a proactive approach in helping kids get moral values. Schools & Teachers should give counseling & moral education to kids & not stress on mere rank numbers. More parent-teacher session to give holistic development to kids is an urgent need of the hour.
More over, govt. should ban/censor violent video games. Movies picturing love relationships between teacher/student - kind of things should be censor/banned.
"Person influencing crime should be more punishable than the person doing the crime", says our law. His parents should be severely punished (by jailing and huge compensation for the victim) for poor parenting. This should alert all parents who are busy making money and with entertainments. Also this will make every student should regret for his actions, and will surely learn better lesson and become good. Very sad to hear such news. This is all due to the changing culture and economy. Government should change their motives and should take preventive steps to bring economy better. Otherwise I am afraid, we would be seeing many more social issues.
Extremely shocking incident and is unbelievable. The tragedy already happened. Now it s time for the Government,School management, educationist and psychologist to find out the root cause for this act and to take appropriate corrective action immediately to prevent the recurrence in future. My deepest heartfelt condolences to the victims family.
schools should have some type of mentoring to these types of students
and understand their pain what they are undergoing, it is very easy to
write comments in the dairy what action the school is taking. in today's scenario parents are running around in their jobs to meet the education
expenses and other expenses, they are spending little time with kids.
In my life i never took teachers or the humiliation meted out by them
seriously.when asked i would become dwarpalikas(gate keeper) or
extended out my hands for good thrashing.fortunately i had very
supporting mother at home.world has changed a lot.teachers are not
support system its the parents.teachers are just treated like other
professionals expected to deliver every time.its the duty of parents
to save their child from all kind of influences.real guru teaches you
to live your life.though i feel very sorry for the teacher. but i feel
equally sorry for the boy,it will be a difficult path for his
redemption.
Nobody wants their ward to be murdered/criminal. Its more of repercussion of the new Generation cinema and TV. This is pretty common in western world for the parents to have a check on their children's activity over cable TV/internet. Though this check should be in place in our places but better censor board and honorable ministers who is conceiving to put a ban on internet websites, should consider the same policy for TV as well.
Very sad day for entire community. strict security should be in school to check - father of the student, should compensate the young two daughters of the teacher, who died, for their upcoming. parents should devote more time on their children, daily, however busy they are, to inculcate good habbit - pocket money, mobile, internet, ipad, iphone, should be restricted.
Its really shocking not for me but also for the others. Here we can not blame only students but also teachers. At the age of 14/15 the students are very sensitive to every thing. At the same time it is very difficult to handle such children because at this age they are just about to approach adulthood with much more dreams. Every child has its own dream. Now in the educational institutions importance is not given to the creativity and new practical knowledge. Teachers (i am not talking about all teachers) do not encourage creative thinking and at the same time do not encourage students to do some new thing. I am sure every individual has its own dream (positive). When the individual get obstruction in perusing his/ her dream, he/she is tempted to do such type of things. Now a days everybody with a positive dream should try to pursue his/her dream. If he /she get any obstruction he/she should talk it with the authority to find out a solution but should not commit crime like murder.
First of Stop all the Violance Movies to get Certified or Viewing openly in India, these Rich Producers, Directors and Actors etc do not have commom sense how their Movies affect the General Public at large...Secondly Parents must learn how to Treat Children, which is lacking in India Far behind in All class of people.
Last but not the least Our Politcal System had currupted upto that extent only few Leaders left in True Path.
Have to jail the parents for his actions. Social and moral responsibilities should be taught by parents. This is a clear failure on the part of the parents to teach the social values. Should be a eye opener for all the parents in future.
I assume that both the parents of the boy, ie.the father and mother are employed and they are having no time to watch the behaviour and character of the boy daily. Also, nowadays our Tamil Cenema is nurturing the violence as if it is a bravery act, and also the young girls are very much liking it. I wonder what our censor board is doing. In my school days, 45 years ago, there was at least one hour class in a week for teaching moral attitudes and good behaviour. But nowadays schools are not taking care of moral classes and sports. Our Education department and the Govt. should take care of this.
Anyhow, tears are rolling in our eyes when we think of the two girl children of the slain teacher. It is not enough that our Govt.is giving compensation to the children. It should take care of the their education upto higher studies.
I am one of the past pupil of this school and i really feel sorry for our teacher who is the victim of the indian education system, but on the other side it also shows the mental stress which might have been loaded on the student who committed this murder, i am very much sure this is happend because of this bloody indian education system and i am damn sure that still indian goverment will sleep
While most other newspapaers have mentioned the name of the student...why The Hindu alone has not given the name of the student..It is The Hindu's selective way of reporting...secular reporting..
Really shocking to hear such a cruel incident and is more shocking to read the comments of some people about thIS who were absolutely SENSELESS AND THOUGHTLESS about the incident. Hope these are the Indian citizens who grow up their own children with NO MORAL AND ETHICAL VALUES, NO FEAR OF GOD AND NO RESPECT TO HUMANITY. Hope parents (who atleast have common senses to think)will prevent such things just by NOT GOING AFTER MONEY and letting your children alone AT HOME to sit up with DEVILS like TELEVISION, INTERNET. PARENTS OF THE BOY BEAR THE MAXIMUM RESPONSIBILITY AND ARE TO BE CONDEMNED FIRST. Next person to be CONDEMNED is the GOVERNMENT who continues to turn a deaf ear and blind sight to any such incident happening. ISN'T THERE SHOULD BE STRICT LAW TO ENFORCE THE ETHICAL AND MORAL EDUCATION OF CHILDREN AND GENUINITY OF TEACHERS AND SCHOOLS. WHY THEN THERE SHOULD BE A MINISTRY FOR THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT. May God forgive the boy and let him learn the real meaning of LIFE.
I agree with all that it is a very. But I am even sadder by the comments. I too was like that boy so I sympathise with him. Up to 4th standard I studied in the Indian school system. During this period the teachers use to torment me because of my poor performance. I was slapped and made to stand inside rubbish bins just about every day. When my parents saw my report cards then I was beaten to the point that I started bleeding from my nose. I was alone, mentally and physically abused by those who the society deemed trust worthy. I became depressed to the point of being suicidal. My parents did not understand my behaviour until we moved to Australia where the education system is more supportive of struggling students. Due to my experience in India, I hate studying and learning and continued to struggle till graduating from engineering.
Very sad news to read, and this incident to be viewed more than academics. More than the schools and colleges that need special initiative to teach some moral values such as patience and morale, the home parents are the one to blame. We can have grade system in schools instead of marks that may help improve student psychology and approach towards their academics.
Films have a deleterious effect on the minds of students at an impressionable age.Whatever movie icons may say,the damage caused to society in glorifying violence and unruliness has to be put an end to.My sympathies to the family of the bereaved
Lot of improvement has to be done in education system in our country. Parent-children relationship and teacher-student relationship has to be given a serious attention.
According to Indian education system ,Teachers should be strict at their
students , because they play a important role in everyone's life...
The staff and students of the school must outrightly condemn this
dastardly act. The wretched culprit's parents must render an
unconditional apology to the aggrieved family. Minors, the world over
get away with a lot of non-sense.This must be put to an end, forthwith.
If that means tougher laws against minors, so be it. Let the so called
champions of human rights make loud noises. The hapless victims also
have human rights
The boy and his parents must be brought to justice.
I don't believe That a School Boy will be doing like this antisocial work. It is very ofence in our social Education System, I think 1st Problem in our Government Rule & Regulation for Education System, Following this rule the Boy's are going to down in Education not in Improve on his/her Education. the Result In Front of Yours. This Very Bad Rule & Regulation for Education System in our India.Plz,I sorry to Say 1st try to change our education Rule & Regulation
Will the Censor Board own up responsibility and henceforth be more senisitive towards violence in films?
I blame squarely and strongly the Indian Film Industry including bolly/tolly/kolly etc. woods (sic.) for justifying and glorifying violence and possession of weapons. In my family we do not watch any commercial cinema except children's animation films. How can a ninth grade student know what to do with a knife unless having seen the usage somewhere? Also, someone in his house should have noticed a weapon grade knife?
The student should be punished. The judgement should be moral for other students.
Let her soul rest in peace.
Very shocking. This brings a deep sense of insecurity in any profession. Parents are responsible in shaping their child's attitude from younger age. They have to make up the child's mind to face such situations even before they enter into schools. Parents have to educate their children how to handle hectic situations in schools to avoid them taking their own decisions which may be destructive.
Its very shocking to hear that a 15 year old boy killed a teacher. This
shows how are yougsters are being trained up.Rather than working hard
they go in wrong direction and miss out the gift of life.I request all
the parents and teachers to teach students the core of life as the
saying goes " A strongest person in the world is not being powerful but
being patience."
Glorification of crime and violence in movies, perpetration of notions of self-gratification upon commiting such crimes, portrayal of a misguided 'sense of self-esteem' are more than partly responsible for such insanely gross acts. We are exposing children to a degrading culture that seeks to epitomise the baser instincts of man, thrives on selling carnal passions and has an utter disregard for ethics and values. Any factors such as inadequate parenting, absence of self-restraint, inability to cope with stress only act as catalysts to facilitate such crime.
This was not a crime of passion, it looks like it has been pre-meditated. Very disappointing, indeed! My heart bleeds for the poor teacher's soul and her family.
It stands as another low water mark in this age of declining values in the society.Should we proud of the fact that we have arrived and joined the leauge of the developed Western countries where this kind of juvenile revenge stories are a common case?.Is it not ironic that this incident happens in a society where the its elected representatives unabashedly chose to pander to their licentious libido in the very sanctum sanctorum of democracy. As a society we collectively failed to be watchful citizes which is subservient to all other roles we play as parents, teachers and voters etc. What we have been doing all while, allowing vicious seeds of hatred grow in an unbaked adolescent mind.May be seeking individual nirvana away from the world of flesh and bone human beings in the narrow cocoons of our own mindscape?
Well. I have also been a student. I have known the atmosphere. The laws these days are in favour of the student. While teachers hold the social responsibility for inculcating moral values in a child, they must be given some freedom. But they're hand-cuffed. Though I do agree that a few teachers are brutal in their approach, it's not the smae case always. The upbringing of the child is another factor. They must be given only those things that they need. Rs.100 as daily pocket money at the age of 15 is a questionable act. Another point to be noted here is the impact of Cinema. They have brought in the boy a rage to kill. Are our movies teaching the society only these? Where are our social responsibilities and moral upbringing going? Is this the path we are travelling? Shoul not we realize this at the earliest and take pruden steps? This has been the land where gautama Buddha and Mahatma Gandhi led by examples. It's time to think....
It is time that sociologists, child care specialists and those rearing amilies and journalists and the media should be worried about, viz., the decline in the society and its standards and moral fibre. It is a shocking thing. Read with the frequent strikes of even the literates like lawyers and college students, at the drop of a hat for reasons unconnected to ntheir profession, the decline in the soceity needs analysis, comments and remedies.
This shows the relevance of the Censor board ! Movies involving violence should be certified 'A' and it's the duty of the parents to ensure children are kept away from such movies ! Besides, part of the blame should be apportioned on the parents for having had him pampered and not having shown him the fact , sometimes criticism is good for someone's progress in life and should be taken with a pinch of salt! My heart goes out to the teacher's family , especially her kids, who have been made motherless by this single act.
My Condolence to the teacher family. This is insane, victim parent's should have been punished for this.
Really it is shocking and attrocious incident and it has to be condemned. Strigent action to be taken against the boy, parents who has nurtured him. Media is also one of the reason. Parents should not pamper the children at the early stage. My heartfelt condolence to the family of bereaved teacher Ms Uma Maheswari.from S R Dasarathan
2. Giving undue pressure by giving assignments, tuition, special coaching with out understanding the child's psychology. The child does not have any other vent out to redress its grievances. The parents thrusting their unfulfilled desires on the child, insisting them to be a doctor and engineer with out understanding their interest.....The system of the School is another culprit to make them mad without games and sports.3. Today's technology- most of the children lack interpersonal relationship as they spend most of the time with computer, comp-games, internet, movies etc., There is no one to one contact and interaction. They donot know how to speak with others and how to behave with elders, teachers....All the stake holders have to play their role responsibly in order to nurture our future and make them responsible children.
it s a very sad and shocking incident. i am sure this must hve happened because of the pampering of the student.
Very painful news. In fact, it seems like boy's parents are the real culprit. Why the parents are giving Rs. 100 as packet money on daily basis? If the boy is having good purchasing power beyond his age, then how he will focus on studies. No words to describe the pain and anguish of teacher's family. The teacher was murdered just because of doing her duty sincerely. Govt should force the boy's parents to pay a reasonable ransom to the teacher's family. Let us pray for the teacher to rest in peace.
Really feeling bad on the teacher.. These kind of attitude with the boy on watching films is really offendable. children in school must be taught not only with the subject but also with the patience. "A person without mental control is nothing but a waste bin".
I condemn this act . Why not teachers give a chance to students and hear why they are not performing well. Guru <-> sisya it should be either way . Anyways we can't get what we have lost, my deep condolence to this teacher's family.
It is really a horrific incident. It is so sad to note that 9th std boy how dare he is to murder his own teacher in the class room.Where are we going? Where has the respect towards the teacher gone? When you pause and ponder over the reason for such insanity there are several reasons other than poor parenting.
1. Government policy- Mushrooming private schools, No play ground, No importance to sports games.( When the public schools were playing crucial role imparting education, there were lot of respect to teachers as parents too were sending the children with out any financial difficulty). Now as it is privatized even the child and parent have the wrong opinion that we pay and get the service, why to give respect to the school and teachers). The child should play in the evening time for good physical and mental health as quoted by our great poet Bharathi. How many schools allow them to play, even if they allow it is so ironic that no play ground in most of the urban school.
Influence of media can be cause, the way parents upbring their son is a cause ,the society is a cause and now the boys future is at stake and the teachers life is no more....Dear Parents...as said i bible.."Parents must upbring their children with the best moral values so that they never go wrong anywhere"...Givng money and loving is not everyting......have an eye on them evrywhere....now he parents here are actually got cheate dby the son.....it is not matter of age..its his mental depressio that mite have made him such way....my condolences to teachers fly...let this issues never happen anywhere..
we are very unhappy to read this column,we feel sorry for her two
daughters,we pray for her two daughters to overcome this tragedy.moral
and ethics should part of the school curriculam
Its really sad & shocking news! A big question mark on the upbringing of the child. From the young age itself parents should instil in the child the qualities of patience, kindness & respect for the elders & fellow being. Today its on teacher , tommorrow no doubt it'll be on Parents.
The falling values in human relationships is one of the reasons why
such expressions of anger is found in our midst.Husband and wife are
fully occupied with earning for the family. If only enough time was
spent with the boy on his performance (good or bad) in the school by
his parents, yesterday would have been like any other normal day for
them.Today even grown ups in their office (the 3 MLAs of
Karnataka)do inappropriate things,at the cost of
others/themselves.Monitoring the activities/giving sound advice to
the wards by parents is a must to shape a good future for them.If
they let the easily accessible films, like Agneepath, host of TV
serials to be watched without parental control, yesterday would be
only repeat of many such days to follow.
I don't see the reason, why everybody is blaming on the student. The mistake could be lot more on the Teacher's side. She might given a lot of mental torture to the kid, which he couldn't handle. Being dull in studies is not strange, the teachers should find out the ways to encourage the children in their studies. But the actual thing happenning is, most of the teachers are acting insane to the students. I can assure that most of the teachers in the lower secondary school, are still calling the students with uncomfortable words like pig, dog, donkey. See the time is being changed, media got powerful. You can't except the children to just cry to their mom & dad, he would get lot of bad exposures out there. So don't blame the kid, who is not even matured. Look into the behaviour of teachers among the students. I'm afraid, this incident would inspire(badly) many students. So as a parent enquire your child abt the interaction of their teacher, if it is abusive then take action officially.
If two teachers has failed a student and the student decides to kill one teacher,
why did the student stabbed this teacher not the other ?
Just a Question I wanted to ask, I am not Pro or against the boy nor the teacher
Great Awakening to all students as well as teachers. It clearly shows
how today the effects of media influences young minds.
If a student does not get to know a subject or he or she lacks in any
subject , It is the most important duty of a dedicated teacher &
parents to find out and guide them to reach to understand it.
Any upsetting comment or punishment deviates the young mind from not
liking the method of handing that situation. This is fueled by the
media effects acts without thinking and such unfortunate incidents
happen.
Any upsetting comments by the teacher or parent has a negative effect
on the young mind.
Clearly we see that in this case.
Very Sad !!!
According to me the Parent are to be blamed, they have not nurtured
his kids for the Society, they have groomed according to their
Lifestyle, which is the core reason for this Brutal Behavior by the
student.
Parent should understand though the "Environment" is bad , if they
create a Good "Atmosphere" in his family, they can mend / manage /
change any type of Rude Child.
Every Parent need not feed Poverty, but suppose to teach / show what
is poverty.
The incident must be condemned in the strictest of terms and the boys parents penalised for what their ward has done. But of equal importance is an investigation on the trail of events that lead to the boy committing this horrendous act. Our educational system that perperates needless competition and elicits comparisons among the students is the core thing to blame, add to that is the way many teachers tend to ill-treat students they deem as dim-learners and cause irreversible psychological harm to the young minds, which slowly build up to something as cruel as this.
"Manushya roopena mrigascharanthi" has been worded with excruciating mental pain by our ancestors! no wonder! none can judge human to human treatment better than a human:( Teacher's position is becoming vulnerable day by day.
Irresponsible Parenting! If an adolescent kid doesnt understand the value of a human life and if he doesnt understand what a "Guru" means, he's definetly a threat to the society . It's sad that his parents were too busy to imbibe moral values, compassion and humanity in him. This incident should be an eye opener to every parent who has a kid to teach the essentials first and then worry about ranks and grades!
for all their wealth and affluence the parents ended up producing a
murder instead of a child and student. what were they doing when
powerful emotions were building up in the child.
This is a very sad day for blossoming India. Our deepest sympathies for the family of the dedicated teacher. This just reflects the moral decay within the society which has now taken everyone by surprise. The blame can never be targeted to one single person. This is the culmination of several factors. I hope this sad event will be an eye opener to the super busy parents who shower money instead of quality time with their children, the damaging film industry, slack censor boards, and to the competitive nature of the education system that only aims for exam marks and not teaching the current generation of students the importance of personal responsibility and consequences. How rightly the Bible points this all to sin but it is very sad that such a drastic event should act as an eye opener. I hope our eyes are truly opened.
Very shocked to hear this news. The boy at his early age should not have done this. But what made him to kill the teacher? Investigation should be done on the teacher side too. What kind of torture or frustation the child have undergone which made to do like this? Really very bad to hear such a news. The boy should have controlled his anger. Because of his anger, he lost his studies in such a good school. Parental care also plays a role in this. Feeling sad for the teacher also considering the teacher's family.
I feel this article is biased in favor of the teacher. It is true that
the boy was clearly at fault to commit such a crime. But one must look
also from the perspective of the boy. What propagated him to take such
an extreme step? When I was in school, I too didn't fair well in
mathematics and I too was often insulted by the teacher in front of
the entire class. This leads to a lot of pain and frustration in the
student's mind especially at such a young age. Teachers must
understand that students too have feelings and their psyche can be
affected very easily. One must think about the mental state of the boy
when he took steps to carry out what he did. I think we're all being
ignorant by pointing fingers at the parents and their parenting
skills. The reporter of this article too should take a neutral stance
by reporting both sides of the story and not one sided like how she
had actually did.
It is so cruel, nowdays Primary Education has no morals. A student should know the value of teachers. Do not let them go to the movies in primary stage. Parents should make them as a good student.
Children should be taken care by parents very carefully because it is this habit is shaping his future. Had this boy not taken this decision now certainly he would show this attitude in future. At young age they should be groomed well with a good moral.
this is the influence of Hindi movie Agneepath ... read till end you will see ... it has been shown clearly in all movies it is OK to be voilent, cruel etc.. I dont blame the young mind for this action it is the society we have to blame not even the movie maker.
Can someone punch this kid in the face.
Our students need to be taught the meaning of 'reason', and more
importantly how to use such a tool during difficult situations in
their life. Being 15 is quite old, old enough to understand the law,
the worth of human life, and the general weight of such an act.
I feel terrible for the friends and family of this teacher. Children
need to be taught from home what is right and wrong. They need to be
taught how to apply such morality in everyday life. The teenager in
this scenario has not only been brought up in a heavily ignorant
environment, but perhaps has also been ignored himself.
Who else watched Agneepath? Its certainly not a movie for kids!
Its easy for children to get inspired by movies especially where a kid starts murdering people!
There seems to be no age restriction on movies released in India.
This is a shocking news. Parents pamper their children. Any punishment
for misbehaviour at school and parents and media are at the teachers'
throat. Why should the teacher then bother about the kid. When they
punish a child, it is very rarely out of sadism but only with an
intention to correct the child. And if repeated diary entries were made
in the child's diary by the teacher, did not the parents bother to check
with the teacher as to how and where the child is lagging behind and how
they could both help. My condolences to the family of the teacher.
Is there any point in placing the blame on parenting, very specially
on the boy's parents? Are other parents different? How many of our
parents today have the guts to 'deny' a wish of the wards? We do not
even dare to say 'no' and thus displease the child. The child then
will not learn to cope with frustrations in life. If the situation
continues, the price our country will have to pay will be very costly
indeed. All promotion, no corporal punishment and liberal assessment
systems may be respected for their child friendliness and respect for
child rights. These and such will be the price that we have to pay.
Discipline of the student that has to be one major contribution from
education is unattended to. Some teachers who try to make up for this
will pay the price.
The respect for the school and school teachers are brought down in the
mindset of the students by the proliferation of tuition culture and
craze for professional education.
I agree that the family has to take responsibility!
I feel bad for the teacher.
Also in Don Bosco school they are beating the kids very badly. Please
help.
The boy is not a criminal. The indian society is degrading and blindly following the western countries system. What tells us if we look at the last part of the article. If an hero teases or acts like a rowdy in movies, people laugh and worship it as heorism. But the consequences of those kind of movies are like this.
=================================================
=====================================================================
why is that private hospital not getting prosecuted? shouldnt it be primary duty of that private hospital to stablize the patient instead of refering them to govt hospital in critical condition.
yes, the parents and that student have their own issue but life lost could have been avoided if private hospital stepped up to handle this case.
rest in peace to the teacher's soul. hopefully film makers and theater owners enforce 18+ rule for such violent movies that can cause psychological influence to students.
Why does a school student require Rs 100 as pocket money per day? Was this given because the parents were guilt in not spending quality time with their son? Why do school children require mobiles (and that too ones with cameras, etc.)? Unrestriucted internet, irresponsible cine and media world, incorigible parents ...... all have led to this. What can the law do with a juvenile? Send him to a reformation centre which will ensure he comes out as a hard core criminal.
It is indeed sad when students get violent and this ought to be a wakeup call to approach youngsters inline with current cultural environment driven by Internet and Media. These days violent and obscene material are few clicks away which corrupts and drives violence in today's youth. The movies aid this behaviour significantly and their rating by censor board is a far cry from what is followed in western rating system. A PG-13 means something not suitable for young audience and is enforced. Parents need to be aware with what goes on, when kids spend more than 8 hours in an outside world which is not safe guarded. The responsibility lies right at home and has to be fixed at home, an attempt to overreach for their kids sake also pushes parents to edgy behaviour. The schools also need to profile the behaviour pattern of students, unfortunatley the society we live today has become more complex with too many variables at play and has to be understood. Deepest condolences to the family.
"She was taken to a nearby private hospital, which referred her to the
Government General Hospital. But she died on the way."
Appalling! What a shame! A life could have been saved! When will we
change?
This incident of teacher stabbed by student is a begining of orchestrated intolerence in children caused by many reasons in this kaliyuga for which we all are responsible in someways. From my point of view, the family of this student is primarily responsible for nurturing this kid in a pampered manner with good pocket money but not enough time and energy to build his moral character, attitude and values. If parents don't punish their child, society will punish them or else they will punish society. Nowadays, we elders are so busy in competitively accumulating money and wealth that either we don't bother to give first lessons of moral and ethical eduation to kids at home or care for their feelings above material fulfilment. That adds to the cause for impatience and immorality in long run in kids. I strongly request all parents to give time and energy to kids and alert teachers to be more vigilant while dealing with present day kids to avoid such unexpected events.
very sad for teacher untimely death. kid should be given harsh penalty.
It is very easy to blame parents and society for the child behaviour.
Every person living in this country has lost fear and respect for the
rule of law , due to the prevailing social networking / internet sauvy
culture. Even in this case the boy being a minor will get away with
simple punishment , but what about teacher family.
The child seems terribly frustrated and angry. But I also think this incident is a subtle reflection of the psychology of people in general. There is so much competition around, and since everyone is playing the game of survival, there is frustration, fury and hatred in the air. It's not only children but even people pick their scent.
Besides all of us are influenced by the media. It paints a different picture of reality because that is what we want to see! But again, it's choice. It's in our hands what we want to take and what we'd like to filter! So control is something we should all imbibe before passing it to the youth of today, who are our future.
we cant blame the students always as it is an age where blood boils at the peak....when they are tempted they do such things out of anger....so the teachers are not only in the position to give the info in the book but also treat them physcologically
Teachers are expected to be oversmart and more knowledgeble in applying presence of mind than school students (generally erratic), besides assessing the behaviour of each student in their endeavour to uplift the pupils qualitatively. Parents must be summoned whenever necessary. Also students should not be permitted to bring unnecessary items like knife, blades, pokers etc. to school. Stern action is a must and No more repetition of such incidents in India please.
Very pathetic state given to the teacher's family, especially to her two
daughters. Parents should play a vital role in building up children's
mind-set. They should not avoid their role. They should inculcate
healthy ideas in children's mind.
They should be guided what films to watch and what not to.
Also they should be given the internal meaning of a story (I do not mean
to support the film from which this child got inspired).
Media should try to give good ideas to the society.
For doing her job honestly the poor teacher has to suffer!!!! In instances like this where there is premeditated murder the criminal should be beheaded under the Sharia law. Often I was thinking Muslim sharia law is very cruel and barbaric!!! To stem the rot such penal provision is necessary where justice is prompt!!
I am an alumni of the school and shocked to read this story we used to love and respect our teachers , students & teachers relationship is on all time low personally speaking teachers should be trained in child psychology so that they would be able to identify problematic children so that they could get help before they end up doing something like this .
Parents do not spend time with the children and expect the child to cope up with the daily pressure and tension of schooling
The expectations of parents and the pressure to perform by whatever means is the problem
100 rupees daily pocket money................movie Agneepath,
influenced by the hero who takes revenge on those who falsely
implicate his father.read between the lines.
Very Sad and upset about what has happened. We are talking about value based education. Are we really practicing? I think the system is to be blamed.Schools and home should give lot of importance to Value based education. These days parents have no time to talk to their children and many teachers also don't talk to their students. When a teacher finds an odd behaviour in a student he or she should talk to the student in person and try to counsel. Parents should also take any comment from school in the right spirit and cooperate with the school in the interest of their children. We talk about only IQ(intelligent Quotient). But about EQ( emotional quotient)And SQ(Spiritual quotient). We should concentrate on developing these.
Parents are over ambitious and thrust all their unfulfilled ambitions on the children.Schools for their survival, they over do things. All children by birth are good.Only the Enviornmet around him should be checked by both teachers.
Life has become highly stressful and all parties concerned are unable to do what is expected of them - DHARMA - and Dharma is not being taught to youngsters in a meanigful manner ...parens are lost in their own indulgences losing sight of their Dharma ...Rs 100 per day pocket money is defnitely lavish however rich one might be ...
Can HINDU start a fund to take of the two girls who'd need a lot of care and attention as they grow up with this trauma ... disciplining is a MUST but the art of disciplining is also going awry at times affecting young minds ...Maria Montessori taught the systems ... but her name has become a glib word for making money in schools. In the school that I studied there was NO punishment but we all did well and even after 44 years we still meet ...something terribly wrong with the education system, society ... am a Trustee in a school in Chennai where punishment is NOT practised in the way it is understood - "victimizing" a young mind which can go beserk.
It is a very sad incident and news. The conduct or character of the boy
would not have changed in one day to commit this crime. Over a time he
would have developed such a thought in his mind. Only parents should
watch their children's behaviour regularly and correct them at the
appropriate time. In this case it is only the parent's failure in
monitoring the boy's behaviour over the years!
The days are changed. The older days behaviour and conduct is entirely different now. Now-a-days, we cannot even respect from our own people, because of the cineema which causes and influences the boy.Eventhough my father was a school teacher, in the same school where I (now aged 65) had my studies, had received severe punishment for 15 minutes delay in coming to class during rainyseason, beaten severely below my knee and I was standing the whole period. That is older days. This incident shows to teachers to safeguard themselves it is better to avoid giving remarks and advice, but they can put their marks only. If any particular parents of the children come and ask about his study and marks, you can explain to them that is also without the presence of the boy. Moreover nowadays parents are well aware of the education thro' media. Like college, teachers can teach and go out of the class, because the parents only can take care of his study and behaviour and teachers cannot be blamed.
This incident brings home the need for teacher- parents interaction, particularly when the student is a regular offender in his academics. That the parents should give a hundred rupees o a 15 year old per day is an act of utter irresponsibility, if not criminal conduct. it is such indulgence that breeds "entitlement psyche" in the children and no wonder, the boy believed that the teacher also should be indulgent. The parents did not reward the child for his performance in academics but inculcated in him a sense of economic superiority and approval of the parents for whatever he did or did not do, that translated itself into a belief in his invulnerability. Who is to blame for the tragedy? The courts of law will decide on his guilt but it is the parents who should stand trail, if what is reported of their munificence is true. They may live to regret destroying two lives, both for no fault of theirs, one for doing her duty and the other for the parents not doing theirs.
Yes. time has come to change the entire curriculam. as was
published on 5-01-12 under"is it a school or Jail?"
I was a student at St Mary's and left the school after my AISLC exams
in 1983. The school had a history of teachers beating students up, and
for no reason. There was an incident when I was a student when a
principal, Fr George, was beaten up in his office by a boy whose cheek
he had caned. I would not take the school's version of what happened
without a truck load of salt.
I hope the police investigate this thoroughly and that the facts come
out. What is in the media right now is not even half the story. While
not condoning violence of any kind, especially not murder, I would
like to request that there is caution exercised before all blame for
what happened is laid at the young boy's feet. This is from someone
who knows St Mary's from having studied there and at its sister
institutions St Columbans and St Pauls before that.
What a pity,Teacher gets such an unfair treament for doing her job.
Very sad and tough on teacher's family.A harsh reminder to all parents, probably this brutal act would have been avoided had parents paid more attention their child's on growing restlessness and arrogant behaviour.Hope Teacher's family gets good support from relavent authorities.
It is very sad incident. Now a days every body was busy in their
duties and they have no time to spend with their children. We request
the parents please spend at least one hour with children and give
them all type of moral support to improve the good
personalities. Please ask day to day activity of children. Please
improve the intimacy with children. Children never tell lies. Parents
should go to the schools and to know about their children not with
head mistress only with class teachers.
this is absolutely shocking news . I hope the student gets appropriate punishment for the murder he committed . Being underage and from an affluent family should not be grounds for leniency. Reducing the severity of the sentence would tell him that is ok to get away with murder .
Well I guess we need to start installing security checks in Schools from now on ! Sad.
Condolences to the family
Sad to hear this news. The teaching methods in India ought to change.
When I was in 11th Grade my Physics teacher scolded me in front of the
whole to class for scoring low marks in Physics. Before 11th grade I
was doing good in 10th grade. That incident really affected me a lot.
It is a coincidence my Physics teacher's name was also Uma. She was
more into seeing their student's marks than understanding the real
issues of the student.
Well - Lets the change the system. Let the students be given the
opportunity to open up their mind.
Arun
Parents denying their role in educating their children, negligence of
arts and literature, Teacher parental pressure on children, Mark based
education, unhealthy competition for higher grades and ranks, lack of
respect for child rights, no stress on moral education at home and
school and last but not least movies promoting violence have together
resulted in series of such incidents in the recent past. We have seen
in past that few commit suicide unable to cope up with the demands and
pressure of parents and teachers. Todays incident is the other way
around. Mind you, in each class there will be such tendencies. It is
high time that we address such issues in the best way possible.
One can only hope commonsense prevails among our elder generation and
guides the young in the right path.
This disturbs me the most:
"She was taken to a nearby private hospital, which referred her to the Government General Hospital. But she died on the way."
Why did the private hospital refer her to the govt. hospital? Please explain the cirumstances of their denial. Is it because of legal difficulties? Could she have been saved if the pvt. hospital had taken her in? If yes, I think the hospital should be held responsible for her death, along with the boy. I think the supreme court addressed a similar legal issue regarding accidents, but what about this circumstance?
Very shocking to see this happen to a teacher in daylight. If hindu's report about her being taken to private hospital then reffered to Govt.Hospital is correct then that is atrocious. How can they deny health service in those dire situation ? Who knows she could have survived.
It is a sad day for the thousands of selfless and noble teachers. Having said that it's time the teachers evaluate the way they reprimand the students. Sometimes a student is insulted in front of fellow students, the parents are demeaned for having a child who doesn't perform up to the "standards" set by school, caned, and sometimes targeted. Every child is unique and expecting everybody to have the same qualities is self-deception and detrimental to both teachers and students.
What about the hundreds of students who killed themselves because of the bad behavior the teachers?
I'm read a lot of blather in the comments universally condemning the student's act.
Not so fast.
While loss of life is always terrible, I would color my perceptions of this incident
with background on how exactly this student (who obviously needed help, evident
from his poor performance) was reprimanded. Young minds are a valuable thing;
And they are highly impressionable. A teacher who cannot identify the markings
of an unstable youth, who cannot be bothered to properly counsel that youth, or
worse, reprimands in a manner that causes shame and humiliation, is no teacher
indeed.
Harsh, but a perspective that is quite warranted.
I've had such a teacher (who will remain un-named, but, to my complete chagrin,
is receiving the nation's top honor in her profession!). Of course, my reactions
were tempered by my personality (and also the fact that I didn't really give a hoot
what she thought). But some others may not be of such a bent. This student
seems one of those.
Please don't rush to conclusions. Though it is regrettable that the
Teacher has lost her life, and I do feel sorry for her family. Please
Don't immediately blame the boy, obviously he is responsible for the
crime, but was it the teacher that drove him to it? Think about it, we
all know how harsh schools are today, students have been beaten to
death, It clearly points to a case of psychological trauma here. Did
she only pick on this student? How long has she been writing such
comments?
On the parenting issue, even affluent parents expect results, did they
beat him? were they too Strict? Think before feeling sorry for anyone
or blaming the system... That isn't to say the system is not to blame
for this...And those grown up adults on comment boards here... act
like one instead of being blithering idiots and shouting at children,
culture and taking sides
Consider this as isolated incident. It doesn't mean I am supporting
nor justifying the student's action. Law should take its course
without spins by police or political forums. One has to see overall
happenings in India. Day by day people are increasingly becoming
restless, insecure and unsafe due many reasons. Inflation,
Unemployment, Corruption are some of the reasons. For India to become
a more developed nation, it
has to be evolved over time. Its not a ready-made shirt to buy from
shop. Democracy and Civility of a nation are not iPods to buy from
Apple or from America. We have to evolve at political and social
levels. It took 200 years for America to achieve their current level
of super power and democracy.
Very sad. My sympathy goes to the teacher and the teaching world. This
is one kind stressing the student to get good and good marks. The
education system in India which is putting enormous pressure on parent,
teachers and parents. Govt should address this issue in a different way.
The students should be thought about human values, our culture, Religion
and finally the studies.
In Indian culture, they teach kids to respect guru as a revered figure...Obviously, this kid was not raised in such a culture. This vicious crime should not go unpunished as it happens often in India, especially when the crime is committed by kids of the rich or those belonging to certain favored communities. This low life should be treated as adult like they do in the U.S. and should be put behind bars for rest of his life and his parents should also be punished as being silent accomplishes.
"She was taken to a nearby private hospital, which referred her to the
Government General Hospital. But she died on the way."
Why? Was it to avoid possible legal problems or the private hospital was
incapable of handling the emergency situation? It is very sad if the
reason was the former.
Why was she not treated in the pvt hospital? May be she could have been
saved if the pvt hospital had treated her instead of sending her to
another hospital! The pvt hospital doctor also should be held liable for
her death.
Really sad and shocking news indeed. Is our country developing into a society
without respect or morals? Looks like no one is safe, be it doctors or teachers.
Children need to be taught to accept responsibility for their (in)abilities and work
hard to overcome their shortcomings. Parents and society have a huge role here.
In this case, is there a role to investigate why the private hospital refused to
resuscitate and stabilize her before shifting her to a governmental hospital with
undoubtedly poorer facilities? This may have saved her life. Should there be an
attempt to teach our private hospitals their duties as well?
My condolences to the family. There is no way our country can progress if people
are not allowed to discharge their duties with peace of mind and security.
Looks like the news reporter has become an investigator and a judge that all she needed was to pass a verdict on the student for his crime! I do recognize the competition that newspapers face and the appetite for violence that people have while reading news stories, but I think that a reporter for such a newspaper should show some caution in their writing! Once you have reported in such a fashion, any evidence that goes against what is reported here will not stand a chance for scrutiny, in the courts or in the mind of the public!
Very sad news especially coming from a country like India. This shows the extend to which our community has been corrupted by western influences, especially in children. The belief that schools are fairly safe places for our kids to learn and grow has been shattered. Close cooperation between the teachers and parents can go a long way in identifying and abating such behaviour in youngsters.
I am really shocked and pained by loss of life. Cannot avoid worrying about that kids current status and future!
A teacher comments "how do we engage with our students?.." This is the real reason! We need professional teachers, not employees to create best citizens from our students. My daughter told me her difficulty in managing the day at school adjusting to 5 different egos (teachers)!!
when a student behaviour is suspicious, one must talk and open up the issues early on to avoid potential disaster later.
FYI
(Contd..) I wont be lying if I said I have wished some of those teachers dead at some point. Of course my thought process is different today at 32, where you react different to stressful situations. But at 14 or 15, you don't have that sort of maturity. I would also be lying if I said my bad experiences in school did not leave any scars. They did. I have cultivated a lot of time trying to shape myself into a more confident person. But sometimes, the trauma I went through in school comes back to affect the way I react to things under certain situations. At the end of it all, my point here is to create some sort of awareness for parents, teachers and students. Teachers, please try to encourage and motivate rather than humiliate and chastise. Parents, don't push your children to do things YOU want them to do and things they are not interested in doing. Rather, encourage their strengths. Watch for warning signs that your child may be depressed or traumatized.
The child has to be understood . Was it because he was not comfortable
with the way he was dealt in the class . Was the pace in which the
teacher and parents wanted different from his capability for which he
might be facing the sense of inferiority in the class. A lot of things
need to be examined before coming to a conclusion blaming some factor
or the other . While expressing my deepest concern over the inhuman
act , I would like the school, teachers and parents to go deep into
their ways of teaching , approaches and expectations from their
children so that it does not repeat with any other child or teacher .
As puberty sets in, they go through a lot of changes psychologically and physically. They tend to be more sensitive, self conscious about their bodies, about keeping up with their peers. Granted, it's difficult dealing with one teenager at home, let alone a bunch of hormonal teens in a classroom. But a little bit of understanding and care, these kids could be easily won over. The article states that the boy nurtured some sort of anger/ill will against the teacher for a long time, which implies that something must have happened, once or repeatedly for that anger to build into a murderous rage. I would not say the parents are to be blamed entirely. Kids are often very good at masking their emotions at home. I know I was, when I went through all that humiliation in school. But there are warning signs. Is the kid reluctant to go to school? Is he/she a loner? Eating habits etc. Children can go through depression just like adults do.
It was a person who killed the doctor a few months back and now it is a school child who killed the teacher. Very shocking. Is this the result of our society as whole has become very self-centered. We teach our kids only for the exams, we don’t cultivate good moral, we only expect results from them, and we are not all bothered about their mental make up! The entire social fabric, how we are deteriorating shows us right before our eyes. I for one living in the US for the past 22 years, when I visit Chennai I am shocked to see our kids how they behave even in a simple open to public cafes! It is MTV Culture all over! My brother in law a doctor in India and me had to just turn around from a coffee shop in Annanagar, need not tell you what we saw as soon as we entered there, same thing in the bookshops and the music stores in the available malls! Starbucks and Peets Coffee and for that matter any public coffee house or restaurant of Barnes & Noble Book Store will never ever tolerate this. Looks like parents have let their kids go astray! Like charity begins at home, definitely character also begins at home! Let us as parents be a moral model to our kids and tend to them and nurture them to be better citizens!
Feel really sorry for the teacher and her family; certainly didn't deserve that. But going through the above comments, I must say that every incident must be looked upon individually. None of us know what the student-teacher relationship was like and what provoked the student to do that. Ajmal's testimony should bear little importance here.
The whole act of 'disciplining' students through violent methods like beating up, smacking the knuckles should go away. Its not upto the teacher's or anyone's discretion to decide if the child should be beaten for any act.
This is not acceptable from a 9th Grader.
There are better ways to express his anger
at the teacher than to act in this way.
No excuse! He must be tried as an adult for
this ferocious crime. No excuse!
My heartfelt condolences to the teacher's family.
She died in the hands of the very one she is trying
to educate and better their lives.

Speechless
Future of the country is dark. Its a black spot on teacher student relationship. It is time that our educational institutes take initiative and teach students to listen to their elders and respect their elders. Parents also should spend more time with their children.
I have completed my graduation in 2005. In these recent 5 years there is a drastic change in students mentality. they have become more careless and carefree.
Being a student of the said school although I wasnt her student I know
for a fact that the said teacher was in no way strict and according to
the news that he done it because of a remark I strongly disagree
because the remarks column are just a warning and hold no power over
the child's academic progress. Never once have I or any of my
classmates found the said teacher shouting at any kid or embarrassing
him in front of the class or his parents . Its still a puzzle why a
boy has done something this horrible. And for those of you who say
blame it on the parents ? You people are wrong. The parents have
nothing to do with this . Which hard working parent would bring up
their child to do such a thing. If you people do not know the
situation of his parents do not comment. The entire fault as of now is
on this kid. The teacher or his parents are not to blame. Al I can say
is R.I.P to a special teacher and may justice be done unto that messed
up kid !!!
Whatever has happened can be averted in future, if we as parents and teachers try to change ourselves. In today’s world all the parents want their child to be a doctor and engineer. Everyone wants their child to top the class. Parents please understand that education is just a part of life and not life itself. There are so many avenues children can try out other than education.
Parents stop nagging your children for getting good marks.
Teachers stop being cruel to low graders, pls cooperate with them and give them moral support so that they become good human beings rather than just any engineer or doctor.
If the student was so agitated, the teacher positively would have
berated him and made him so humiliated and miserable that it generated
so much of hatred and devise a plan to kill her. Teachers should be able
to deal with students emotions and also desist from extreme harshness.
Perhaps teacher education should also be reoriented since with passage
of time the society also has changed.
It is due to lack of morale among the students community.
Long long ago we have moral study classes in the elementary sections. During sixtees
the period was wiped out. moral values are not taught now a days.
A gruesome act by a child of IX std.how could a child harbor so much
anger.A child doesn't become homicidal overnight.A lot must have been
going through his mind.Teachers must be equipped to understand each
child emotional needs, not just to manage chalk and the board..We need to
have counselors at school level to eliminate such cases at root level.
A simple counselling could have avoided such a horrible act.
as one from a teachers family whose father, grandfather, brother etc. were all such teachers and as one who was my self teaching it is extremely saddening to find the deteriorating teacher student relationships. it is not only bad parenting(parents should be the first ones to be punished for such things)but also should we say that t.v.shows and sometimes cinemas also contribute to such atrocious acts. values should first be taught and culture copying should be condemned first. condolences to the teachers family and the school administration should first take action to support that family and the children of the teacher.
We all should see this in the boys view. being a 15 yr old boy, why would he want to kill a person? and no parents would teach their kids to stab a person.i dont blame teachers or parents or the students. i blame the current educational system. i am a first year college student and i have came across these situations and i know how much of mental torcher is given to a school student. when i was doing my 11th and 12th grade i will get back to home by 6pm after finishing my special classes at school. 6.30 to 8.00 is maths tuition and 8.30 to 10.00 it is physics. then i will get home 10.30 in the night. so, i wont have time to spend with family. on Sundays it gets even worse, there would be 3 hrs tests are conducted in maths and physics.in the in between time my parents will scold me for not getting good marks in exams. you may think children who are going to school instead of going to work are blessed, but the truth is they are sinned. By saying this i don't mean what the boy did is correct.Teachers and parents should understand the how difficult it would be for a 15yr boy to undergo these mental torchers. the current educational system must be changed to avoid these kind of problems.
I don't understand what is going on in our state. This is really
unbearable act of a boy. Before providing education also need to teach
how to love each other not only to the students but also to the
teachers. These kinds of actions should have to be stopped, i don't know
how. Only God can change this bad situation from our world. I do think
this is the beginning should take necessary action!!!!! :(
This is horrifying! If a student has a problem with the teacher, there
are millions of ways to tackle it.. My deepest condolences to the family
of Umamaheshwari..
It is very sad to see human being murdered. All the above comments support the victim, but nobody questions what was the environment as society we provided for the crime to happen. As a society we are pushing our children to extreme academic pressure and conditioning them that academic excellence is the only parameter of success in life. Also the media has to blamed partly and I support @ Partha
comments. . The entire social fabric is turmoil due to the influence
of western media. All the religious believes which promote common
ethics and seed of questioning right or wrong is fast fading. This
should be a wake up call that academics only don't promote the
psychological development of the child.
Dear all !
1. Are we teaching moral education in schools now?
2. Are the parents or grant parents moral stories/ Religious stories
now?
3. Are we teaching any principled life now?
4. Is the Education system in practice now gives anything other than
getting top rank and getting good Job?
5. Are the teachers doing anything other than dumping the voluminous
lessons into pupils mind?
This will continue unless we give a deep study into this subject.
The only reason our country is ahead of others is because of the stringent & quality education , the previous generation was fortunate to have. Even countries like US are talking about Indian Education in Science and Math. It is atrocious for these Politicians who don't even pass tenth grade are deciding about the future of our education. Parenting does play a role in soothing the aggressive behavioural outbursts of children. Distress at home will be aggravating factor for the children.
How far we will push our children & teaching fraternity in the name of competition.Either the parenting is responsible for this momentary crime. At times teaching fraternity & parenting forgets the mental tension on a adolescent, when that age does not heed to anybody elder to them.Instead of pointing the blame, the stress level is too high on parenting, teaching fraternity & adolescents. Atleast now after loosing a valuable life, will we safeguard our children, our teaching fraternity & be familiar with duly giving a ear to adolescents while taking parental care.
I am amazed and shocked by some of the reactions by the way of comments! Some blame the internet ,some the Government ,some the system of education, some used this to blame the 'all pass', some one even suggested about teaching Hindu culture! Dowry, untouchability, caste etc., etc., are also the unique product of this culture! Are these the solutions? Why are we beating around the bush? It is a new culture we have adopted, blaming culture! Ok fine, if you feel the modern tech is responsible for this, then why don't you disconnect your internet, throw the tv out of the window, snatch the new mobile phone what you have presented to your kid! Can you do it? WE CANNOT... please don't confuse an assorted incident with normal life. If the comments above are true, then all the students should be criminals by now! Are they? Don't put more pressure on the young generation! I am honest in my views, such incidents were heard before in developed parts of the world, now we hear and read it in India too, what is the reason behind it? Let us forget about the handicaps an Individual child or human may have, that’s totally another angle we may have medically, psychologically or emotionally. Let’s not go into it. The point to ponder here is , are we putting that extra pressure on a child today, which he is not able to take? It is a competitive world no doubt, but is he mentally and physically prepared or adopted for it? After all no two human are same. Invariably all of us want our kids to be a Doctor an Engineer, or comp. Pro etc., etc., is it not taxing or asking too much from a Kid? The modern world has put too many pressures and expectations from a kid, Let us not confuse an assorted incident with the day to day life. Please, we are not doing justice to the younger generation!
You cannot blame the parents for this tragedy. The boy must have been forced to stab his teacher. The teacher, according to me must also has her part in her death. She must have abused the boy/murderer. So please let us all understand what circumstances led the boy to stab his teacher.
It's sad. But a stray incident somewhere is not indication of a collapse of all that's good in society, it's not a sign of bad parenting or of declining morality. It is wise to withhold radical judgments like the ones proferred in the comments until all the facts of the case are known.
Two issues stand out. One is a deep provocation and the other is complete breakdown of any respect to a teacher. And both these issues cannot stem from one side unilaterally. It has to be a two-way episode. One should know from friends of the student who stabbed the teacher as to what had been the provocation. Its not uncommon these days to see teachers delivering dialogues from action movies - which provoke students to no extent and results in loss of complete respect. Mediocrity in teaching, mediocrity in parenting, and mediocrity by other mediating means has resulted in a loss of a precious life.
Really sad thing happen in South India, everyone should understand & think what made the kid to act like this.... Our own culture is getting spoiled bcz of western culture influence (in the form of IT companies, Tv media, internet..), tis incident is one of the example. This kind of news we use to hear from western countries, now it started here. Please wakeup at least parents & teachers. Spend more time with their kids & teach them our culture & good behavior. Do not focus on MARKS, please focus on good education.
Most unfortunate thing to happen to a teacher in classroom- to be greeted by a student with knife. I empathise with the teacher's family.
This shocking and terrifying. Such incidents calls for lot of soul searching. There is no winner in this situation and the loss is not limited to the bereaved family of Ms Uma Maheswari or to the boy and his family who's life has changed for ever for an act done on instinct and passion but all of us. This incident warns and indicates to a society that some rot is there. Tamil society for long was based on simple living but all of a sudden has gone awry pitching all its bet on fast cash. Human values have suddenly have become cheap. The victims of this mad rush are not always, the villains.
It is sad both for the student as well as the teacher. If they had known that the child had been angry for some time, some one could have worked with him and also spoken to the teacher about ways to handle him. That could have prevented this double tragedy of a death and a young person turning to murder. Schools need to create time for students and teachers to have conversations. Such conversations should range from understanding anger, fear, jealousy and so on. Also, good to generally chat. This should be part of the day's timetable.
I too am a school teacher and have spent time talking to my children about my anger and theirs and actually understanding it. Please don't condemn the child unless you condemn the system as well.
I am very sad when i read this thing, teachers==gods and also parents. If we kill teacher ,that mean we killed our parents, think be +ve way please this is my request to all my friends...
Deep condolences to the teachers family. But instead of calling for the head of the boy blindly on the fact that he comitted a murder, I think a enquiry and investigation should be conducted to acertain whether the murder was comitted in cold blood or due to impulse of the moment and whether teacher had harrassed the student resulting in the extreme action.
First, my heart felt condolence to the family of the slain teacher (Umamaheshwari). The fact that she was waiting for the students in the empty class indicates her dedication. It is really unfortunate it happened in India, as we are taught to respect elders in general and teachers in particular. The fault totally lies with the students and more importantly with his parents, who demonstratively failed to teach their ward about respect. I think the teacher couldn't have done anything so injurious to the boy that he would attach her mortally. Recently I read that Indian school system is trying to incorporate children with various difficulties. This serves as a biggest warning. I think the boy may have psychological issues which the students and the parents failed to notice. Unfortunately this lead to the death of an innocent person. It is a real shame.
My sincere condolence to the diseased family. All happens for two reasons: 1. Cinema makes and give courage to children like this boy to do this heinous crime without fear. 2. Our educational system doesn't teach moral values to respect teachers and others these days. If the boy knows that killing someone is "SIN", he would not have done this.
I am appalled to find the sudden shocking news of the murder
committed by a student. Where is tolerance? Where are the moral values
that are inculcated by the parents in their siblings? I t is high time
that the society must change its outlook. It is the duty of the
parents to instruct their off-springs to accept their mistakes honestly
and rectify them instantly.
This is really a schocking news, but we have nothing to do, because now a days our social pattern has been changed, our values, morality are declining day by day. As I am school teacher we are told by our Principal that not to scold any students, but to inform their gurdians, I am telling you few days ago, two students did not want to join PT class, so principal told them to sit on stuff room after that they went to house leaving school bus and commited suicide, because teacher did not allow them to go class room.
Its very sad to read the news there are some confusions its written classmate parent Ajmal Khan whether he is parent or class mate parent anyway both side of the story is very important rather than over sympathising sides all said and done its a crime punishable society should work collectively to over come such incidents thanks to our media tycoons making billions but at what cost?? of the society.
Besides teaching the routine academic courses, the schools and colleges need to teach some moral values such as patience, respecting the elderly, etc to the sensitive, disturbed children at least occassionally. Most of the parents do not find much time to guide their wards!. Crime in films, internet, etc add fuel to the problem. This incident also compels us to increase security facilities at the schools. Though this kind of incidents are rarest in our country, preventive steps should be taken to avoid reccurrence.
Where are we heading towards? No words to utter.just thinking about the children of the teacher.Irrepairable loss
Mr. Henry should apologize to Mr.Ajmal Khan for not understanding the original news item in the HIndu and thus attributing the misbehavior of the murderer-boy to Mr. Khan's child. Mr. Henry, take time to read before commenting.
Very sad to hear this news. It shows the morality has gone bad. We have to take care of children regarding emotional control. All religion tecahes that. The first priority should be better human than any thing else.
yesterday i was traveling in a crowded bus. suddenly a bunch of students came and started making fun and cutting jokes about their teachers. i was shocked about the student's culture. i feel the mobile. media and IT are the main reasons for the deterioration of our culture. our entire social fabric is destroyed. we are not hearing any good news now a days.what will be the fate of our country if these students become rulers after some time?. God only take necessary action.
We can’t build a good society without teachers. Govt. should stop sending students to higher grade(Passing) without proper evolution(Exam) and giving bonus marks in board exams for worthless reasons like (out of syllabus @ etc). We have lot of symptoms that students are moving in wrong direction, parents should take extra care about their child at least in teen age to avoid such incidents and missing their happiness with their child. Govt. should plan some long term plan to correct education system. Condolence to the family of Umamaheshwari.
I am sorry for the loss of the teacher's family.
I do not believe parenting is an issue here as suggested by some of the people leaving comments here. Atleast not the whole reason. Some personality traits are innate, and good/bad parenting might not be able to change it much. But good parents should be able to spot the behavioural deviation of their kids and give them an exit to their feelings.
Else we will not have the saying ' vaathiyar paiyan makku' in tamil..
It is not proper and scientific to blame it all on the parents for the child's behaviour.
Shocking News ! Condolence to the family of Teacher Umamaheshwari.
Few days ago before coming back to university, I was talk to some of the kids in my village neighbourhood about their school. One of them was particularly upset the way he was made to feel embarrassed in the classroom simply because he was not taking tuition with one particular teacher. Who knows what goes into a kid's mind who can not endure everyday tortures? Morality demands the head of the wrong-doer but I sympathises with the student. I have always had some great teachers but I always felt slapping rest of them in school.
This is very sad incident and bad example. Nowadays the kids are growing in a very immoral way and circumstances. The parents should be very carefully watch the behavior of the kids and help them to come out from their bad and negative feelings / attitudes.
B.Pari
Sad incident...wonder to what extent the anger in the small kid was
built and for how long? and what is it that the teacher did that the kid
reacted in such a way...?
A very shocking incident; bad parenting indeed..! During my student days on late 60's, I along with my fellow students did undergo severe punishments from all our teachers - all for the sake of our welfare. If at all we are what we are, the credit goes to the teachers of yesteryears. However, nowdays we see the parents being up in arms to condemn the teaching community for taking the "cane" into their hands. We had never encountered such situations duringour schooling days. In fact we would be reprimanded further for having been punished. Still remember my dad going upt to my teacher & pleading with him to give more punishment. This model is nowadays not being followed thereby resulting in such incidents. The parents also need to be taken as co-accused in this case. Condolences to the bereaved family.
Most unfortunate. This shows bad upbringing and lack of parental guidance in shaping up character of children.
Quite Unfortunate. While expressing the deep condolance, the following may be worth noting; Psycho analytical study should be conducted about how the student was reared. His association, hobbies, the type of film/video he sees, the peer group he had etc. The parental relation too. Also about the way how the teacher performed in the class; whether there was any personal humiliations/insult meted out against the student etc. For adolescents it counts a lot.
The root cause of the issue lies in the fact that parents are busy these days. They hardly find time to speak to children. The precious hours they get after all the hurry-burry daily chores are spent in front of the TV for serials. Eventually their own life becomes the screen play for another serial. Had there been reasonable interaction with the child, he could have emptied his anger and averted this. Our children need two ears other than theirs to hear them which is miserably lacking in present days. Blame it on parenting.
@A B Henry Sir, Mr. Ajmal Khan is not the parent of the student alleged
to have killed the teacher. Agree with everything else you have said.
Very sad to note the incident
@A B Henry
Mr. Ajmal Khan is not the parent of the boy, he is parent of the boy's classmate.
the act by the student, though an adolescent.is a cold blooded murder and is to be condemened by all quarters of the society.there can be no second opinion that the teacher should have an effect control over the student and the parents should extend whole hearted cooperation . in this case the student shall not be viewed as a juvenile delinquent alone, but also be made to face with stringent punishment which should teach formidable lessons to the student community. also compensation should be extended to the victim-teachers family. it is high time the government wake up and bring reforms in the field of education. the practice of parent-teachers association and their periodical meet should be encouraged.with due concern, i would like to appeal to the authorities to introduce spiritual discourses for the students ,.which will certainly improve the morales and character and develop patience and persevarance .
From reading the article, I don't think Ajmal Khan was the parent of the boy. Looks like he was a parent of a classmate just available for comment.
Dear Mr. B Henry, Please read the NEWS carefully. Ajmal Khan is a classmate's parent & not the killer's parent. Why the name of the killer or his parents is not mentioned?
it shows how the students are in this generation. some times parrents need to cooperate with the teachers and pasrrents show love thier children. At the same time teachers should not be very strict to the student whereas teacher can little effort to love the students following principles of father of our nation along the inventive methods except beating or punishing the students. teacher should have not complaint about the student because this kind of complaint shows the inefficiency of teacher indirectly and i dont critize the teacher nor i don't justify the student's act.also this act shows that teacher is not interested in the student but they just divert the issue to the parrents.it's becase they try to put control over the childeren they become juvinile.so it's not mistake of both and it's unnecessary to blame each other but v need to blame only the medias and because of medias everything is spoiled.
Films are corrupting the minds of the children.Parenting and peer group have their own share.Frustration in children is leading them either towards committing suicides or the incidents like above. They are not bothered about the reasons and solutions of such frustrations.Knowingly or unknowingly our so-called modern education system has made the students too sensitive. It has become very tough for the teacher to mould these TOUCH-ME-NOT students.
Very sad indeed. Such instances are usually confined to the west, and I'm surprised to see something like this in India . Even though the boy's act is not justified, the fault lies in the education system. Obsession with marks, intimidating punishments and encouragement of studies at the expense of sports and fun activities are all responsible for vengeful student behavior. The idea of being strict must be dropped by teachers in lieu of methods that will encourage students to be responsible for their work and behavior.
It is very sad and tachers sholuld be treated like parents.
Horrifying, speechless
Such a great school in North chennai and it is very shocking to hear this news too. Really we had a good teachers in st mary's they not only thought us a lesson, they have thought the real meaning of life.
Very shocking and horrifying incident.I think that in modern education system we loosing our traditional value education that was getting.teachers were the most respected in society, these day education became just another profession.
I am a Father of two kids who are studying in 2nd standed and Senior KG, and my wife is a Teacher. When I was a student my Father use to tell me that school is the second home and we need to respect love and obey Teachers as we love and obey our Parents when we are at home. At that time when I was punished by my Teachers my Parents never botherd about that, but now a days the situation and circumstances changed and even corporal punishment is an offence. I really wonder some times what is the differnce between the punishment by a Teacher and Mother, if a student feel the school as a second home he will defenitely feel his Teacher as his Mother. I feel each Fathers and Mothers are responsible for the intolerent feelings by the students agsinst the Teachers.
Sad incident indeed. The child could not make out the gravity of the act he has committed. Surely a case of poor parentage where one forgets to teach values and principals to kids. The moral principles like"Acharya devo bhava" ,should reach the child from the parents only.
Let this be an eye opener to every parent.
Sad incident indeed. Worrying that this sort of behaviour has entered the educational institutions in india. Will ministry of education hear it and take action. Will lessons be learnt? The jobs of teachers are made impossible by the class size!
Extremely shocking and tragic!!! When a child has such anger against a teacher, it is the duty of a parent to mellow them down and make them understand that teachers will be disciplinarians - if a teacher is perceived (by a student) to be unfairly biased, then the child should discuss with a parent and the latter should make a call on whether the situation calls for a meeting with the teacher or a headmaster.
Somewhere the value system fell through the cracks!
Very sad incident. It indicates that there should some change in our education process. It ahould a integrated value added education along with Life Skills Education. Also request all parents to spend some quality time with their kids.
Condolences to bereaved Teacher. This is a prime example where parents and school must monitor kid's behaviour in and out of the house and school.
The education system in India is heading for dog food!. Engineering
college/universities dance to the tune of students than creating real
engineers, and so are most medical institutes. Now this kind of behavior
at early stage of life of a students, uproots basic values in society.
Very unfortunate incident, whatever be the motive behind this act cannot be justifed before the court of law & the allmighty. heart felt condolence to the family members of the teacher.
Shocking!
No ETHICS,KNOWLEDGE oriented studies are going on in the present school system. only MONEY(for institution),MARKS(for satisfying parents) thats it.
WHO CARES ABOUT STUDENT. Finally two lives are paid for the mistake done by this SYSTEM. HOPE some changes will come after this incident.RIP
Could we know both sides of the story? No matter what the reason may be,
the boy's actions can never be justified but each story has two sides
and both sides need to be heard.
This is indeed shocking! Such incidents reflect the change in society at large! It's bewildering to note that a young boy of 14 years can resort to violence and crime!!
The Head of the Institution is to be blamed for this incident and the
Management also. There is no safety to teachers in all educational
institutions who take care of the welfare of the students. But such
innocent teaches are caught badly. In a large number of schools and
colleges the Head of the Institutions do not take care of the welfare
of the students but take care of the private managements in terms of
money. In this case the Management should give compensation to this
teacher since no security to her life in this school. It is requested
the Government of Tamil Nadu to issue circulars to all schools to
install CCTV cameras inside the class rooms and metal detectors not
less than three to four at the entrance of the schools to know whether
the students are in possession of deadly weapons. Will this Government
view this seriously?
The boy, a minor who has taken such a grievous step wouldn't have done
this crime without a reason. Rather than concluding it abruptly, one has
to look down on the reason behind his rage. Our Education system is
famous for its punishing fashion which results to social embarrassment
and not to forget the notorious corporal punishment. I am extremely sad
for the teacher and her family. But the case has to be looked from the
boy's perspective too.
sorry for the teacher...
and it also rings a bell on today parenting style.......
Human values are given a go bye in India. The ancient India, more
than the academic study, discipline, honesty and other values were
taught whereas nowadays, the curriculum is teaching knowledge and not
wisdom. Moral science or moral period has become a forgotten session
in all schools. It is right time for the Govt. to imbibe these humane values so that the children of tomorrow are good and noble citizens more than the academic qualification.
Heart felt condolence to the family of the teacher. In the recent past there have been attempts by the government to reduce the examination from memory test of the students from volumes and volumes of theory. Only ability test for application from knowledge using computer and books should be the path.Moral instruction and education for knowledge only should be the taught upto plus 2.Discipline should be the prime matter. School admission for money and discrimination in education in primary level should not be there.
In professional courses and degree courses only should be intensive for developing a human resource of the nation. Films depicting violence and romance happy ending with violence all should be banned. Most of the children are spoiled by violence in the films and video games.
Very sad day for the whole country. Please don't get angry for what I am about to say . Let's see the flip side. I still remember the days when my teachers used to whip me to hell. Not just one or two days, I mean, everyday year after year. I used to get so angry with the teacher(s) (but I haven't done anything unfortunate act like the student above). Not everyone can restrain their anger. Why don't we look into "teacher whipping students in a barbaric manner"?. Just a counter argument .
I once studied in this school, its unfortunate that my old school is now
getting famous for wrong reasons, parents are to blame..
I am not surprised by this act of the student. My 10 year old son complains to me everyday that he is being harassed by the teachers in his school in Bangalore. No compalints could help us stop these acts of the teachers. Children too needs to be treated by teachers with respect to avoid these kind of incidents.
It is time for all the schools to conduct stress buster/psychological sessions for Teachers, Students & Parents. This will help in reducing the anger/anxiety/evil thoughts in a person. This will also reduce the suicides. This will help in increased perception of understanding each other in the society.Dear Mr.Kapil Sibal...are you hearing?
Ban all those TV serials and Movies which highlight these evil acts of revenge/hatred. Spread the word of peace.
watching cartoons(which have more violence) and action/thriller movies,
youngsters are becoming more violent then earlier generation
Deep Condolences . It is high time that experts in the field of
Education ponder where things went wrong. A Ninth Standard boy
murdering the Teacher deserves to be condemned by one and all.
Nowadays whether adults or Kids, there appears a tendency to lose cool
easily. We have seen road rages as well fist fights on petty issues.
At this people are mobile Pressure cookers without Safety Valves.
Obviously Cinemas, Television Channels and media need to observe self
censorship as they are powerful tools and children in their formative
years are carried away by wrong depictions. Also there is a crying
need to introduce Moral Instructions Period which perhaps could help
children. We also need to sincerely introspect basic malaise existing
in the education system to avoid further loss of Teachers" lives.
Lastly a successful education system should ensure children relish
their studies and not recover from studies.
she is a very good teacher and she is so kind she is not so strict she will be kind with boys she was teaching science and hindi for more then eight years. The boy must be punished sivearly. may god bless miss uma mahaswari and her family all of you kindly pray for Miss Uma Maheshwari
Very Sad to here the news...
It is really shocking news. The children these days are arrogant. The
moral values are taught from the family but unfortunately parents
hardly have time to spent with their children resulting in these kinds
of incidents. At least from next academic year let every school
(including Govt schools) have a period where teachers and students can
share their views and interact, which many children lack. They should
be aware of the social responsibilities also.
Instead of waiting for others to start, let each of us (teachers) take
initiative thinking that every child is his/ her own. Take this as a
challenge. Lets hope for a better future for our children.
There were times when students were afraid of teachers. The Govt. intervened and informed the teachers, they cannot punish students in the class, but still have to instill discipline, morality & ethics among them. The teachers were in a dilemma.
They have given up on strong approach towards students. They have now resorted to continued nagging/negligence/rejection of a student. This has brought about a strong reaction from the students. This is an outcome of such reactions.
Today's incidence is a result of intruding in to one's profession & their approach in dealing with their wards. Government cannot interfere in a profession, when students' behavior is impacted by other factors like, free information, surplus disposable incomes in the houses, continuous pampering in the house and so on.. There has to be a balanced approach when dealing with such potential segment of society that builds our future(I Mean students and Teachers). P-T-A's should be strongly supported by Govts.
I guess the atmosphere at home and the parents' outlook and up-bringing have a major influence on a child. Next comes the atmosphere around the house. Then the TV and movies are also the main culprits. So much violence is shown from close range, even the different techniques of killing giving the impression that killing is simple, easy and so common. Revenge is projected as something noble and worth going to jail for. I suggest interrogators question him patiently to find out his line of thinking so that we might know where things went wrong in his up-bringing or the atmosphere around him. It may even throw some light on child psychology.
I am not entirely surprised, coming from a state which has a history of violence.. I wud partly blame the effect of films for this.. I have seen a surge in tamil movies which hint on violence towards authority, often conveyed as a negative aspect of the central character, but with the idol worship attitude towards tamil movie stars, it can be easily picked up by youngsters as a show of machismo
Deep Condolence to her Family....
The teacher has sacrified her life for the noble teaching profession.A
very sad and shocking news.
Sad beyond words
First of all the education system should be changed as it is not a value added education,it is just for scoring marks and all schools are focusing only on money not than decepline.horror.The govt should be blamed.
it is really shocking news. Whatever be the reason, it is a horrifying incident my heart felt Condolence to the family of
bereaved Teacher Umamaheshwari.
There have been many cases of students getting annoyed with Teachers but this act should be condemned by all. School children must unite together and say that they love their Teachers as much as their Parents. Teachers need to be extra cautious not to antagonize children unnecessarily, and should remember that children are witness to crime through all sorts of media, including the Internet.
It is very sad to note a boy who is studying 9th Std. had acted in such a brutal manner. My sympathies to the dedicated teacher's family. I request the school management and the govt. of Tamil nadu should help the beraved family by giving monetary support and moral support
I'm a teacher myself and this news gives me deep sense of insecurity and
also something to worry about...how do we engage with our students?
Such acts or outburst of anger and vengeance by minors are common in some developed parts of the world, but not common in India, having said that, it has happened, and it doesn't sound as an outburst or an act of emotion, especially when somebody said he was angry on her for sometime. It is something for the police to findout. But as a common man, I am worried, even a minor hasn't got the respect or not afraid of the law of the land and consequences of committing a crime, leave alone the hardcore criminals!
Teaching profession is a noble profession which includes this kind of
sabotage! G.O states till 8th standard "ALL PASS" means how to
discipline/condition the students? He/She will not listen now a days
parents and what the teacher will do? If the teacher conditions,
parents claim that the teacher beaten/ill treat the student. The
CEO/DEO takes action against the erring teacher. I am not in that
profession but still this kind of act is against "Matha, Pitha, Guru &
Diety"! Intolerance, mutual adjustments, give & take are taught in
moral/value education but there is no time for the students to
practice it in the society/house. We have to live with this kind of
news.
really sorry for the Teacher, a little patience by the student
would have avoided this situation. Condolence to the family of
Teacher Umamaheshwari.
Speechless!
Very sad and shocking news...insane act by the student..:-(
Very unfortunate incident, not only to be condemned. Some strict action must be taken against boy and his parents for parenting in a way that their son become murderer at such a small age. Poor parenting is the main reason behind such incidents. Teachers have all rights to be strict with their students.
So sad and horrifying incident...
