A bus ride back from college with classmates ended fatally for a first-year student of Pachaiyappa’s College when he got jammed between the MTC bus and the wall of a police station.

Puzhal police sources said the accident took place around 2.15 p.m. on Thursday outside the police station in Puzhal. The victim Mathiazhagan (20), a first-year B. Sc Computer Science student and a resident of Panneer Selvam Street, Naravarikuppam in Red Hills, was heading home after college along with other students.

A group of over 15 college students including Mathiazhagan boarded the MTC bus route number 57 F (High Court to Karanodai) near the High Court and were singing and cheering throughout the journey. When the students got out of control, the driver, Janakiraman and conductor, Ilangovan objected to their actions. They confronted the students at Puzhal and the driver rode the bus towards the Puzhal police station around 3.15 p.m.

“As the driver pulled into the police station, the students started to jump off the bus and flee. Mathiazhagan, who was on the footboard at the front entrance of the vehicle, leapt off the bus and was caught between the bus and outer wall of the Puzhal police station,” said an investigation officer.

Mathiazhagan sustained injuries on the head and chest and collapsed. Bystanders rushed him to a private hospital nearby where doctors pronounced him as ‘brought dead,’ the officer added.

The police found an abandoned bag on the bus which contained some books, one of them belonging to the deceased, and a 1.5-foot long knife, wrapped in paper.

Madhavaram traffic police have registered a case and have detained the driver.
