A 16-year-old girl was fatally knocked down by a speeding MTC bus in Mandaveli on Friday morning while she was on her way to school with her brother on his motorcycle. The bus driver has been arrested by traffic police.

Adyar traffic investigation identified the victim as G. Ganga Devi, a resident of TNHB in Kotturpuram, who was a class X student of Lady Sivaswamy Iyer Girls Higher Secondary School in Mylapore. Around 8.45 a.m., Devi was riding pillion on the motorcycle of her brother Vigneswaran (19), a college student, who was dropping her to school.

“As the vehicle came onto Devanathan Street in Mandaveli, an MTC bus on route number H 51, on its way from East Tambaram to High Court, rammed the motorcycle throwing the girl and her brother on the road. The school girl fell in the path of the bus and died on the spot,” said an investigating officer.

Vigneswaran escaped with injuries to his leg. The bus driver, later identified as B. Ilayaraja (38) of Chromepet, parked his vehicle some distance away and fled the spot. He was later arrested by the Adyar traffic police.

The girl’s body was sent for a post-mortem examination to the Government Royapettah Hospital and was handed over to her relatives later in the day, sources added.
