A 14-year-old boy died after he tripped and fell while standing on the footboard of an MTC bus in Pallavakkam on Friday morning.

He came under the bus’ wheels and was crushed to death instantly. He was on his way to school.

The police said the victim, T. Kannan, was travelling on the front footboard of the crowded bus (route number 19G) along with a few others. “When the bus was approaching Palavakkam signal around 8.20 a.m., Kannan fell and came under the rear wheel. He was run over and died on the spot,” said the investigating officer.

Kannan, a class X student of Chennai Higher Secondary School in Thiruvanmiyur, was the elder son of Thangaraj, a construction worker and Nagalakshmi, residents of Kumaraguru Avenue in Neelankarai. Kannan’s brother Udayakumar (12) is a class VII student in a school nearby.

Traffic came to a brief halt on the stretch following the accident which occurred during peak hours. A traffic police team sent the body for post-mortem to Government Royapettah Hospital.
