Student drowns while fishing in Retteri Lake

An 11-year-old boy drowned when he went fishing in Retteri Lake in Puzhal on Sunday.

The body washed ashore a few hours later.

A. Vigneswaran, a class VI student living in Ponniammanmedu in Madhavaram, had gone to the lake with two of his friends.

Around noon, the three boys stepped into the water to try their hand at fishing, according to the Puzhal police.

Vigneswaran ventured a little further into the lake and went under the water. His friends panicked and rushed to residents for help. They searched for the boy, but could not locate him.

A couple of hours later, the body surfaced. The police sent the body for autopsy to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital and later, handed it over to the boy’s parents, the police said.
