In separate incidents on the Marina Beach on Sunday afternoon, a student drowned while an engineering student has gone missing. The two had visited the beach with their friends.

M. Vishal (16) of Thiruverkadu, a Class XII student at a private school near his hometown, had come to Triplicane to take part in a special motivational lecture for students appearing for their public examinations.

The group had visited the beach and entered the water opposite Public Works Department buildings, Anna Square, police said.

Around 1 p.m. a high tide pulled Vishal and his friend into the sea. While the friends managed to swim ashore, Vishal went missing. An hour later his body washed ashore behind Marina swimming pool.

Police recovered the body and sent it for post-mortem to Government Royapettah Hospital.

Meanwhile, a first-year engineering student, Nageshwara Rao (19), who swam with friends went missing in the sea, police sources said.

There was no trace of him till Sunday night. Nageshwara, a native of Warangal, Telangana, was pursuing engineering at a private college in Avadi and was a hostel resident, police added.
