The 38 Foundation Day celebration of Patel Scout and Guide Groups was held on July 29 at the headquarters of Tamil Nadu Bharat Scouts and Guides, Wenlock Park, Triplicane. The chief guest was N. Satish Kumar, president, The Bharat Scouts and Guides, East Chennai District.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Satish Kumar called upon the students to participate regularly in the activities of scouts and guides movement. “Now-a-days, a lot of youngsters are facing problems due to lack of self-confidence. Joining the scout movement will create a sense of self-confidence and courage,” he said. He advised the students to study well, participate in extra-curricular activities, besides excelling in academics, and obey their parents.

Founder and Chairman of Patel Scout and Guide Groups, K. Kamalakannan, said that every student should join scouts and guides to become responsible citizens.

“It fosters personality development of the students and help them imbibe a sense of social responsibility. They become disciplined and courageous, and are in forefront during critical times,” he added.

He urged the students to do well in their studies, take care of their family, and be a part in scouts and guides activities.

“Patel Scouts and Guides was formed on July 8, 1975. This is a voluntary and educational movement, for people of all ages, which is in accordance with the principles of founder Lord Baden Powell in 1907,” he said.

We strive to make our members, mentally and physically strong so that they can make a positive contribution to their communities and the wider world, he added.

Founder-member and secretary, K.L. Ramesh stressed the need for devotion, duty, and discipline among the members. He explained the role played by scouts movement in moulding the character and individuality of a person and spoke about the services rendered to the society by the scouts and guides movement.

He appreciated senior guides and ranger, Sacheeka Aadhavan, assistant scouts master P. Srikanth, and guides, Nida Aman, Jayanthi and Devi Dharshini for their hard work, commitment and dedication.

An one-day exhibition on scouts and guides movement with posters depicting the fundamentals of scouting and information regarding scout leaders who played a significant role for the development of the movement at the national and international levels were displayed. The expo also displayed models of various types of towers, besides highlighting the personality development, leadership and team building training programmes of scouts.

Students, who had excelled in various competitions organised during the summer camps, were given prizes on the occasion. Awards and certificates were also distributed to the Best Cubs, Bulbuls, Guides and Scouts for the year 2011.

Earlier, various cultural programmes including skit, dance, and drama by the members of Patel Scout and Guide Groups were performed much to the delight of the gathering.
