A State-wide security exercise commenced on Wednesday to check the efficiency of law enforcing agencies in the event of a terrorist attack. Christened ‘Operation Hamla – I', the mock drill involves Central and State security agencies, police sources said.

As part of the drill, police tightened security arrangements at vital installations and areas of public gathering such as places of worship, railway stations, bus stands and malls etc.

Armed commandos were deployed in some areas. Police intensified vehicle checks and frisked baggage of visitors at major government offices.

Vigil was stepped up along the shoreline in coastal districts in order to prevent any intrusion via the sea route.

Security was intensified at the major temples in Rameswaram, Madurai, Tiruchi, Thanjavur and other places.

Similar exercises in the name of ‘Operation Barricade', ‘Operation Rakshak' and ‘Operation Hamla' were held in the last two years, the sources added.
