Amid the mounting pressure for rollback of petrol price hike, Minister of State for Planning, Parliamentary Affairs and PMO V. Narayanasamy has said states could reduce the VAT on petroleum products to provide relief to the people.
“The states can lower the VAT and that can help reduce the petrol price,” he told reporters at the airport here last night.
The latest hike in petrol price by Rs 7.5 has come under flak from opposition and also key UPA allies DMK and Trinamool.
On Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa writing to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding more kerosene allocation to the state, he said, “There has been an increase in the LPG allotment to the state. However, the Centre will look into Tamil Nadu’s demand (for kerosene).”

So it is only the oil companies that require income from the sale of oil
- the state governments can do without it?
Will the Centre too reduce Excise duty etc on Petrol and other Petroleum
products?
Central Govt. raised taxes and price of petrol in order to makegeneal
public suffer. Advice to state Govt. to reduce VAT is nothing but gimmick. People should teach a lesson toCongress party.
It's not States reducing VAT,but the question of justification, for the hike? With the so-called,'under-recoveries' being LIES,there is NONE!
All State governments enjoy windfall whenever the price of Petrol is increased in the form of VAT. Instead of reducing VAT and mitigate the sufferings of common man, they cry hoarse against Centre. Hound with Wolf and run with Hare.
