In response to a call by All India Federation of University and College Teachers’ Organizations and eleven central trade unions, hundreds of college teachers across the State have decided to strike work on Wednesday and Thursday.
The decision was taken at a recent meeting of the Tamil Nadu Govt. College Teachers’ Association in Triplicane.
The association comprises teachers belonging to various teaching and non-teaching staff members’ association. The strike, said members of the association, is to oppose the new pension regulations that deny pensions to those who joined work after 2003.
M. Ravichandran of the Association of University Teachers said the strike was also to oppose the increasing vacancies in colleges among teaching- and non-teaching staff members. “Another rising concern is the fact that the experience of teachers in self-financing colleges affiliated to the university are not considered when it comes to career advancement or a job in government college.”
Teachers and other staff members in 69 government colleges across the state, including nine in the city, are expected to go on strike, members of the union said.
