State, Centre solatium

Chief Minister O. Panneerselvam on Monday announced a solatium of Rs. 5 lakh each to the families of five workers who were killed in a building collapse at the Central University in Tiruvarur. Announcing this in the Assembly, he said the 16 injured persons would be given Rs. 50,000 each.

The construction was being taken up by Hyderabad-based D.E.C. Infrastructure and Projects (India) Private Limited. While work was going on at the guest house on the third floor, a part of the building collapsed trapping 21 persons in which five died. Four persons have been arrested, he said.

Urban Development Minister Venkaiah Naidu has announced an interim exgratia of Rs. 1 lakh each to the families of the five workers. The medical expenses of the injured would be taken care of by the government. Mr. Naidu has ordered an inquiry and sought a report by Tuesday.
