Come July, and Stanleans — as alumni and students of Government Stanley Medical College are known — will celebrate the platinum jubilee of their alma mater.

With a view to get Stanleans across the globe connected for the celebrations, the college has gone the social networking way by creating a dedicated Facebook page.

The page — Stanley Medical College Platinum Jubilee 2013 — was created last month and so far, more than 700 persons have seen the page and it has drawn around 200 likes, Justin Paul, professor of Cardiology, Government Stanley Medical College, said.

“Nowadays, both young and old people have Facebook accounts. Many spend quite a bit of time on Facebook. It is this crowd we are targetting through the social networking site. For us, at Stanley, platinum jubilee celebration is once in a lifetime event.,” he explained.

At least 10,000 medicos and doctors of the college would be on Facebook, he said. “The medium would be an excellent way to not only inform Stanleans of the celebrations but also make plans for it. We will also be posting updates on academic, sports and cultural events,” Dr. Paul said.

Already, events including continuing medical education programmes and workshops have been held in line with the platinum jubilee celebrations. The first week of July will see the grand finale of the celebrations.

S. Geethalakshmi, dean of the college said, “We will be able to catch up with at least 80 per cent of Stanleans across the globe in two months through Facebook. When one Stanlean comes across this page, her friends from the college will also get connected.”
