Junior doctors demand that they be allowed to treat patients instead of being made to administer injections and carry samples to the lab

The house surgeons of Government Stanley Hospital went on strike on Wednesday, demanding that the dean implement the instructions issued by the health department on the nature of work that they should be assigned.

For several weeks now, the junior doctors - compulsory rotational residential interns - have been protesting across the state demanding that they be allowed to learn to treat patients instead of being made to administer injections and carry samples to the lab.

According to the striking doctors, the heads of several other institutions had already issued instructions but the dean of Stanley Medical College had not done so.

Around 150 junior doctors gathered in front of the dean's office in the morning to press for their demand.

itis always the practise of senior doctors to dump their juniors for all odd jobs, without involving them along with any treatment, but make them work like ward boys,is nothing but arrogance of those who never give an oppurtunity to learn from their eleders.THis practice is on every profession and perhaps, it is the mentality of most of professionals, including in Law, medicines, and in other profession.if these is the case of DOctors, the fate of final year, and other medical students, will be more pathetic.

It's high time all interns and residents joined hands across India
against their exploitation in the name of patient care. It's common
knowledge that most of their time is taken up by work for which
numerous orderlies, ward boys and hospital staff are employed and paid
salaries. No person grudges anything one does during an emergency.
It needs to be understood that having to do non-clinical stuff because
the staff deputed don't do their duties as they are permanent, have
vociferous and aggressive unions can't be justified.Of course the
seniors in the Medical community just don't care and in most cases
force their juniors to work under inhuman conditions and undefined
hours to hide their administrative failures and maintain day to day
peace with other hospital staff. The media and public are right to
demand better level of care but they should also take a look how the
people who actually make things work at the periphery as well as elite
medical colleges are denied dignity of work every day.
