DMK treasurer M.K. Stalin is set to become the Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly as he has been unanimously elected leader of the DMK’s Legislature Party on Tuesday.

The party’s legislators meeting, presided over by its leader M. Karunanidhi, also elected former Minister Duraimurugan as its deputy leader in the Assembly.

R. Chakrapani, elected from Oddanchatram, will continue in the post of party whip and former Minister K. Pitchandi has been elected deputy whip.

Addressing the legislators, Mr. Karunanidhi urged them to adopt corrective measures and not to give room for a repeat of some betrayals that had already taken place.

“No one can succeed in decimating the DMK. On the contrary, enemies of the DMK have been destroyed. We have seen their designs in the past and they have disappeared like as if by magic,” he said.

Mr. Karunanidhi said the present situation had taught a lesson to the Election Commission and the officials who had conducted the polls. “Our steps should be measured and we should not be cowed down by anyone. Our steps should in no way help the betrayers,” he said.

This is the second time Mr. Stalin has become the leader of the party in the Assembly. He led the DMK between 2011 and 2016 after Mr. Karunanidhi decided not to hold the position. The wheel-chair bound leader used to say he was ready to attend the House if arrangements were made to ensure a comfortable seating arrangement for him.
