Stating that his party would bring a host of infrastructural changes to the Mylapore constituency if voted to power, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) treasurer M.K. Stalin campaigned for Congress candidate Karate R. Thiagarajan in Mylapore on Wednesday.

“We will be a government that will not only serve the people, but be accessible to them and visit the constituency, not only during the elections,” he said, addressing DMK and Congress cadres and supporters.

Taking on the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) candidate, former Director General of Police R. Nataraj, Mr. Stalin alleged that he had misused his power when he was in office as a government servant to book a prominent place in a political party.

“His allegiance to the AIADMK now shows that he was not committed to his post when he was a part of the Police Department. In December 2005, he was in charge of the police force and was indirectly responsible for the stampede that led to the loss of 42 lives as there were no proper safety arrangements,” he said.

Mr. Stalin added that if voted into power, they would ensure that the parks in the area and the government schools were given a facelift and the beautification of the Cooum river was carried out.

“A modernised fish market will be built in the constituency and we will ensure that steps are taken to ease traffic congestion,” he said.

Holding up the DMK manifesto, Mr. Stalin reiterated that they had focussed on bringing about development in every constituency of the State and had not focussed on freebies alone as they wanted to ensure that people weren’t burdened with debts and high cost of living.

Speaking on the sidelines of the election campaign, Mr. Thiagarajan said that as a long-time resident of the constituency, he was very aware of its problems and would be accessible to people if voted into power.
