The Chairman of Sriperumpudur Panchayat Union, C. Venkatesan, was hacked to death near Sunguvarchatram by an unidentified gang on Wednesday.

According to police, the incident took place around noon when the victim was proceeding towards Sunguvarchatram in his car from Mannur. His car was intercepted by a gang, which came in two motorcycles.

As the members of the gang started attacking the car with lethal weapons, Venkatesan alighted and took to his heels.

However, the culprits chased and hacked him to death, police said. As the news spread, people gathered near Venkatesan’s house at Mannur.

Venkatesan was a member of the AIADMK and was elected as Sriperumpudur Panchayat Union chairman. He switched to the BJP following his expulsion from the AIADMK in 2015.

Case registered

The Sunguvarchatram police have registered a case and are on the lookout for the culprits.

Venkatesan had been named as an accused in the murder of a local body representative who was also hacked to death near Sriperumpudur a few years ago, police added.
