While musicians are generally the focus of World Music Day celebrated on June 21, an event in the city decided to shine light on makers of musical instruments.
Naadhabrahmam, a monthly music journal, in association with Anujan Foundation, recognised 12 makers of musical instruments, mostly from economically backward backgrounds on Sunday, said a press release.
“We had people coming in from Kanyakumari, Rajapalayam and Manamadurai among other places. The oldest of them was 91-year-old A. Chinnappan from Thanjavur who makes thamburas ,” said N. Subramanian, editor, Naadhabrahmam, which also celebrated its twelfth anniversary on Sunday evening.
Among the awardees were S. Subakar ( thaalam ), G. Elumalai ( thavil ), N.L.S. Kannan Achari ( nagaswaram ), F. Melgis ( mridangam ), M. Rajagopalan ( veena ), K. Indiran (flute), J. Veeramani (clarinet), S. Sathyanarayanan (harmonium), Kasiviswanathan ( nattyamanai ), U.V.K. Ramesh ( ghatam ) and S. Ganesan ( morsing ).
Mohan Parasaran, former Solicitor General of India, M. Narayanan, former CMD, Tourism Finance Corporation of India and V. Vasudevan, founder-trustee, Anujan Foundation, felicitated the awardees. They were given awards of Rs. 5,000 each, instituted by the foundation.
