The speed breakers at leave a lot to be desired. Many of them look like ramps, and are steep. Due to one such speed breaker near an educational institution Puzhuthivakkam, a smooth drive from Velachery Main Road comes to an abrupt end.
“Besides being too high, the speed breakers on Southern Sector Inner Ring Road lack reflectors and there are no signboards indicating a speed breaker is ahead. The worst-affected are the motorcyclists and bicyclists, who hit these speed bumps,” K. Balachander, a resident of Moovarasampet, said.
Near Balaji Nagar 21st and 22nd Street, Adambakkam, towards St. Thomas Mount, the bump is very narrow, but high. “As there are no reflectors, vehicle-users don’t realise there is a speed breaker till they hit it,” said A. Raghavan, a motorist.
Near the intersection of Muthial Reddy Nagar Main Road, Inner Ring Road, Adambakkam-Vanuvampet and Nehru Street Co-operative Nagar, Adambakkam, the speed breakers have been laid at such a height that cars that go over the speed breaker seem to fly. Similarly, on Medavakkam Main Road (from St. Thomas Mount railway station towards Vanuvampet), the bump is too high that even MTC buses land with a thud.
“The State Highways Department should ensure speed-breakers are laid as per Indian Road Congress Standards. Moreover, the bumps should be painted in a ‘V’ shape and illuminated by Cat’s Eyes (embedded solar cells that glow in the dark),” V. Rama Rao, project director, Traffic and Transportation Forum, Chennai, said.
