Following the installation of 24 high-definition CCTV cameras two years ago, Sundara Murthy Vinayagar Koil Street in Ice House, Triplicane, seemed to be insulated against crime.
The presence of the surveillance equipment served as a deterrent to criminals, especially chain snatchers. Footage from these cameras showed criminals hurriedly leaving the street after noticing the equipment.
However, the footage did not help nab these criminals as they would be speeding away on their motorcycles, and were just a blur.
The residents came up with an idea.
They ensured a speed breaker was constructed within the range of a CCTV camera installed in a prominent section of the locality.
“We sought permission from the Chennai Corporation to set up a speed breaker. Once the NOC came, resident pooled up money for this,” says C. K. Gangadharan, the president of the Association.
The concrete speed breaker was laid within the peripheral view of the CCTV.
“The speed breaker will force the culprit to slow down, and, as a result of this, either his face or the number plate of the vehicle or both will be clear.
“We can hand over the video footage as evidence to the police. This will ensure speedy action,” he says.
Of course, this speed breaker also prevents motorists from speeding.
Residents of this locality are planning to have one more speed breaker set up close to another CCTV camera.
