Special drive against bars without licence

April 09, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 08:10 am IST - Chennai:

The Election Commission has asked the senior State government officials, including the Chief Secretary and the Home Secretary to conduct a special drive across the State to find out how many bars operated by the State-run liquor shops were functioning without valid licences.

The Commission has ruled that no political activity should take place in the bars, Mr. Zaidi said.

Some political leaders had complained to the EC that half of the over 6,800 state-run bars were being run without valid licences. They had further alleged that anti-social elements were using these bars to hatch plans to violate the Model Code of Conduct.
