Special buses for Pongal

January 11, 2014 07:02 am | Updated May 13, 2016 08:47 am IST - CHENNAI:

The State government has allotted special buses from Chennai Moffusil Bus Terminus (CMBT) for those who do not book tickets in advance to travel to other districts during Pongal.

These buses will be parked in platforms one and two at CMBT. Last year, many passengers who had not booked tickets in advance occupied already reserved seats, leading to confusion.

“The buses for unreserved passengers will ply as per demand. We have buses to districts such as Tiruttani, Kancheepuram, Chidambaram and Tiruvannamalai. A big board displaying the buses and respective platforms has been placed at the entrance of the CMBT terminus,” said transport minister V. Senthil Balaji.

The minister was at the CMBT on Friday morning to inaugurate the 25 special ticket booking counters.

A total of 6,514 special buses will be rolled out between January 10 and 13. Those travelling 300 km and beyond could book their tickets online at www.tnstc.in

According to transport department officials, there has been an increase in online ticket booking for buses during Pongal.

“On January 10 last year, a total of 9,125 persons booked tickets online bringing in revenue of Rs. 31 lakh. On the same day this year, a total of 27,000 persons have opted for online reservation. The revenue generated was over Rs. 1 crore,” said an official.
