Commuters of the Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) were surprised to find some of the important railway stations on the stretch filled with workers engaged in cleaning and teams of commercial staff checking tickets during morning rush hours.

The stations at Velachery, Tiruvanmiyur, Kotturpuram, Mylapore and Chepauk were cleaned. S. Karunamurthy, a resident of East Avenue in Tiruvanmiyur, said while the platforms at the station near his house were normally kept clean, it was a surprise to see the number of officials and staff engaged in the Thursday’s drive.

Week-long programme

A senior official of the Southern Railway said the cleanliness campaign was launched in all suburban train sections as part of Rail Hamsafar Saptaah, a week-long programme focussed on improving facilities at stations.

Kotturpuram, Chepauk Velachery, Mylapore and Thiruvanmiyur MRTS stations were given a makeover
