The city’s civic body will soon impose stringent norms on contractors in order to improve road design in the city.
The Corporation council on Friday passed a resolution to improve the quality of roads by imposing stringent tender conditions pertaining to execution of the work.
The civic body has decided to give all interior roads a complete makeover by May 2014. Most of the bus routes are also being developed based on standards of the Indian Road Congress (IRC). Most of the road works done in the past few years have been completed without adhering to IRC norms.
Motorists and pedestrians will be able to make optimum use of all aspects of the new roads to be developed based on the revised norms.
Under the norms to be imposed, the contractors will have to take measures to prevent damage to medians and platform kerbs while re-laying roads. They also have to rectify any defect to kerbs of medians within 48 hours. Failure to do so will attract a fine of Rs. 10,000 per day for a road.
The contractor will use his/her own funds for rectifying defects caused in footpath kerbs or medians during road re-laying work. Further, only 30-lux sodium vapour lamps or LED lamps can be used during road work at night to facilitate construction according to the right design.
Only the council will be authorised to give an extension of deadlines for work beyond 90 days. The executive engineer will be authorised to extend them by just 30 days. The council will relax the penalty imposed for shoddy execution of work only for reasons pertaining to natural calamities. The penalty for violation of the norms will be stringent.
Facilities such as bus shelters will be tested at national tested laboratories under the revised norms.
